Chronography Vol.1

by; Trainwiz

Knowledge and the knowledge of that knowledge comes and goes. what one generation knows for a fact the next knows as myth. such is not the case with the Skyriders, better   known to me and my fellow dunmer scholars as the Pearlescent Chronographers. While those not from Morrowind may not recognize the name, natives will no doubt at this point be familiar with who i speak of. To the uninitiated, i say welcome, and let me answer both yours and my fellow kinsmen lingering on the mysterious clockwork gift givers.

History

What we first knew of the Chronographers came from our encounters with them or perhaps Encounters for the shows they so performed no doubt deserve a capital letter and while incredible, mind shattering and all around unusual the Choreographers always behaved the same in a situation. Dunmer in their time of need, would find fleets of whirling dweller contraptions or mechanical creatures descending from the sky, upon which rode mystics, dressed in metal with fire-red eyrsand limbs of steel. these visitors would impart upon the needy contraptions and physical riddles, which in time would reveal their purpose, always benevolent and helpful it was only after careful studying and a chance meeting an interview with one of these Chronographers, that we learned the truth.

The Chronographers pious dunmer may know of the mystery of Morrowind, otherwise known as Sotha Sil, Seht or the Clockwork king a mystic an engineer and former god of the dunmer people Sotha Sil retreated into his mysterious Clockwork  many years ago where he was killed by his friend and fellow Tribunal member Almalexia. What many do not know however is what happened following this. You see his city was not merely a workshop but a sprawling metropolis. and in this metropolis live fabricants mer-machines, living automatons who worked and loved in the city But with their king and creator dead the fabricants were faced with a decision.

Stay in their home, no doubt soon to crumble without its creator to guide it or leave? While a schism may have divided other such people the fabricants were unanimously swayed by a group known as the Armour of Oscillating Quartz (see vol 3) this group swayed the city into following them aboard a fleet of mysterious “helicarriers”(see vol 2)  from which they sailed out of the city no doubt seeking a new purpose in their lives,  for what are machines without purpose?

Chronography vol. 2; Technology

harquebus, surprisingly easy to operate...

harquebus, surprisingly easy to operate...

Perhaps the most observable instances of Chronographer technology are their ships deemed ‘helicarriers’ by the masses drawing inspiration from Merethic era mananauts these enormous floating ships descend upon villages I can’t fully say  what capabilities these ships truly possess but the speed at which they move suggests some otherworldly engineering we can barely comprehend. While not regularly armed in few cases where fabricants have fought, they have favored mysterious projectile weapons referred to in obscure dwemer texts as ‘harquebus” or ”harquebuses” (see “Harquebuses”) Again little is known about these contraptions certain people have also noted that many events with the Chronographers happen in a nonlinear fashion. many talk of remembering events before they happen or waking up several days ago after having fallen asleep a week from then. Observed technologies confirm that the Chronographers are capable of time-shifts and timestops and their incredible technology may come from the fact that they are capable of traveling to the future, gaining access to things we haven’t even conceived of yet. the final piece of their creation are imperfections a general term used by them to refer to the strange puzzles they grant those in need these imperfections cannot be classified as each seems to function differently one...

Possible future of nirn?

Possible future of nirn?

...account told of how his imperfection changed into a memory speak-box and over time taught him the ways of a different man, eventually allowing him to win over the woman of his dreams. others have become showers of gold a sword in the right

place. whatever their purpose these imperfections all have the end goal of being helpful, which leads me to my next section. Purpose We forget at times that the Chronographers are machines though aware and intelligent to them purpose not living is what drives them But to what purpose do they have you ask?  it took many years to figure out but accounts and evidence overwhelmingly point to what will refer to and has been referred as integrity preservation As time travelers the Chronographers have knowledge of events before they happen but rather than try to take advantage of these they are content with a more noble goal, and try to prevent such events from NOT happening by dispensing their gifts they lightly nudge events preserving what they no doubt believe is the integrity of time. For example a gift given to a starving man may in time feed him  and allow him to get back on his feet. in time that man would lead armies or change events significantly. It is hard to say what the end goals of this preservation is but for now those who receive a gift from the  Chronographers should consider themselves lucky, for they have apart to play in a larger affair, and a destiny awaiting them.

Chronography vol. 3; Origins

During the Battle of Mournhold many of Sotha Sil’s followers fell in battle against Mehrunes Dagon. Rather than let his comrades die it is said Sotha Sil reforged them into automatons of crystal. These twelve hundred saints as history notes became known as the Armour of Oscillating Quartz the same faction swayed the fabricants to leave Sotha Sil. It is believed that theybelieve that their reforging was done for a specific purpose, though one that would take years to come to fruition. No doubt this fueled philosophies when convincing the fabricants to become the Chronographers as we know them now.

Harquebuses

''On the propulsion of matter

mind and mathematics via Magickal

means; a treatise upon primitive Harquebuses

and their descendants as used by the people of

the Aurbis''

dwemeri_rifle_wallpaper_by_seventhlife-d9fnm5g.jpg

The earliest harquebuses known were created, as many things were, by the dwemer of Stros M’kai who used tonal reverberation applied via miniscule tuning forks to the interior of a long rod containing a round pellet of the metal for which the race is known. This would vibrate the pellet to an intense degree, eventually propelling it from the end of the device to whatever unfortunate soul aforesaid was pointed at this pellet would lodge itself in the target vibrating at such intensity as to cause it to explode. This early proof-of-concept would later be refined so as to bypass the primitive need for physical matter altogether.

The Aldmer of Alinor made the next great advancement using the large rods to act as stabilizing magnifiers for their own magicka. In this regard their harquebuses were not so much independent weapons as magickal tools and were regarded more as a curiosity than anything else however after the first incorporation of Alinor under Reman, the early Guild of Mages saw potential in these devices and created self-sustaining enchantments, allowing the much bulkier devices to be used by those with minimal magickal potential. however, the fall of the first Reman empire saw discontinuation in the production and usage of these weapons, as they were merely too expensive and impractical to warrant mass production.

It would not be until the late Second era that the concept of harquebuses would be rediscovered by the Redguards of Stros M’kai. They could not replicate the internal workings of the device, and so had to massively increase the size and use combustive propulsion to launch large iron balls. this weapon, being unwieldy, would be strapped in large batteries to ships, creating basic structure which most later large harquebuses would emulate.

This brings us to the present. marrying earlier, more sophisticated design under Reman and the masterful utilization of the harquebus pioneered by the Redguard sailors, nearly all atherships, whether the grand Vehkships of new Resdayn or the blink-root-ships of the hist, have some form of harquebus battery, though all are far removed from the earliest models in sophistication.

                               The Cacophony

                         The Xal-Gosleigh Letters;

The Cacophony wear gold and hideous masks and their instruments are built Into their armor. most have flute helms that span a foot or more, while the Leader plays his ribs like a xylophone with broken bird bones their bottom halves all dance the same kind of impetuous exaggerated march kicking up dust scaring off scribs the natives say this is all that’s left of Sotha sil. maybe that’s why there are so many Swooners silk webbed women (or painted men) that crawl behind them crawl or wriggle in the dirt an entourage of excess in the din. That’s what strikes you most.

What strikes you most is the clamor, their red noise wandering a boom boom blare as they advance through the plain they say this is a membership drive or a spell or a reenactment they say this might be a great joke of Sotha sil one swooner dies or pretends to the priest besides me a mephalite sporting a sigil-halo in lieu of The regular horned abbot’s hat tells me that these are the last dead leaves of the Velothi south seeing that I don’t understand he tries to correct himself;

But the music they make is a skill that has been useful to ALMSIVI many times since songs are words reborn by which I guess he meant to counteract the common saying by the word I mean the dead.’Ach if only you were here Gosleigh! your notions that the Ayleid shaper talents have moved east and into melody are proved correct! We left earlier than expected I doubt our correspondence will be as immediate as it has been in the past perhaps you have already responded if so forgive my delay as the read through the south maiding is full of listening frames that dare not compromise Again I urge you to procure for me the Adompha scroll and hope that you will not meet with hindrance.

HOW TWO MOON

by; Andy

I hypothesize, based on De-encoded dream sleeve memospores intended for the thrice-forsaken house wizards of the varliance-rend, that, with high probability it may be possible to re-enact the traumatic birth of this world without as it were, the trauma by reversing the failure of the C-signs, Pigmius in particular, through use not of padhomaic nor draconid-wrought thaumaturgy, but rather through the metals and machinations of our Lord, we avoid the drama caused by personality and the violence of self we avoid both the Scarab and the Scarab farmer, don’t you see? they intend it to the thus they were created, they create, and we created them in return!

And now we create anew a perfect clockwork world drifting throughout

Oblivion unmarred by fleshy imperfection…

TRADEMARKS

Our Lord, the Clockwork King  believes in improving upon the designs fair Nirn has given him when he creates anew. of course since there is so much improvement to be done it would be fairer to say that he draws from the  designs of Nirn as of the original remains at the end of the iterative process.

undersea depths home of the Trademark...

undersea depths home of the Trademark...

Witness the Trademark, one of his earliest such designs, based originally upon the dreugh and designed to compensate for many of its flaws and shortcomings Underwater they are intelligent, blindingly fast, and enormously tough however their bizarre life-cycle forces them above water for a year whereupon they shed their octopoid lower bodies well as much of their intelligence becoming little better than beasts. The Trademark, at first glance is much like a dreugh but with the imperfections stripped away Lord Sotha Sil saw merit in the ability to travel between sea and land but affected this transformation far less painfully than requiring the poor creature eat its own appendages, nor did he take their minds away in the process.  A creation of war Lord Sotha Sil spent much time devoted to the best way the Trademark may do battle and reached the conclusion that it had no ranged capabilities. To rectify this it is armed with a powerful electric arc that was most decisive in fighting dwemeri automata the claw was also improved somewhat but as the Dreugh claw is already a fearsome weapon, our lord did not devote much time to it nor to their hide, apart from making it rust proof  At the end of the creation cycle, he also saw fit to enable their eyes to illuminate more for his benefit than theirs, i understand they did not need the light to see in the crushing depths of the ocean, after all but it evendentualy aided his work considerably. and then there was a brief period where he became fond of something he referred to rather cryptically to as “kaiju” so he revisited the trademark and made them all about forty feet long The trademark provides wonderfully illustrative insight into the Clockwork King’s psychology I feel.

Not even the containers are safe...but who can tell?

DE RERUM MUTABILITASIS

BY: Quintus Sextus Septus XIII

I write this treatise in honor and mourning of the death of the last known Mimic hacked to pieces by an irate adventurer who found that the door he was opening led to a closet filled with gnashing teeth rather than the handful of Septims he was presumably expecting. It is a great blow to the academic community, given that mimics were unique in their ability to shift forms at will and their willingness to remain stationary for extended periods. Created by a mad Chimeri wizard some time in the first two centuries of the first era, Mimic were designed to be the perfect guardians of the treasure troves that old mages inevitably seem to collect. however they were an odd blend of flesh and metal the likes of which Nirn had never seen, nor would ever see again. because of their artificial creation there was a finite number of them though over the centuries they disseminated throughout northern Tamriel ranging From Morrowind to High Rock They would typically find for themselves a disused room and take on a form alluring to people rummaging about blending well with the surrounding environs. They did not actually require sustenance but seemed to relish feasting on the unwary regardless, most probably because their creator had a twisted sense of humor.

WIND UP AND WIND DOWN

BY; Goveri-999

It is a matter of some misconception when people refer to those unfortunate automate existing in the crypts as “undead” while theymare nothing of the sort They are not in fact even dead their mechanicsms still function normally. they are even pre naturally healthy. however they mlack the breath of God that infuses us all they have no pneuma and are souls husks half-mer bound to this world. The Rewound.

deep in the forest of brass the unwound emerge...

deep in the forest of brass the unwound emerge...

Unwinding is rather natural, though euphemistic phrase that means the death of the body and passing of the soul to the Dreaming Sleeve and the collective well of souls from which all spring. through some accident or errant twitch of fate, the mechanisms powering our bodies can on rare occasions begin operating again even the pneuma has faded. They retain access to some flickering memories here and there and are even capable of some level of thought, but largely merely attempt to follow through with whatever the fabricant was doing when he died, over and over again stuck in a loop, and if jarred from this loop will become hostile and enraged.

bio-mechanical creatures straight out of eldirich nightmares...

bio-mechanical creatures straight out of eldirich nightmares...

At this point it is tempting to attempt to destroy the body and move on. However it is not so simple to do so. The rewinding process gives their bodiesa massive surge of power without will or soul to restrain it and even if attacked will shrug of f immediately fatal wounds and heal absurdly quickly the only way to defeat them is to unwind them once again to slow their mechanisms and stop them completely merely paralyzing them is ineffective as it is a temporary and essentially illusory suspension of function rather than an actual degradation of the corpus only when they stop moving will they shut down for a second and final time.

Journey through Sybandis

“The Nirn that never was”

as related by Imperial mage Cocius Ratori

My father used to work as a shipwright for the imperial navy it was his pride and joy the latent engineer in him cherished every draft and every hammer swing and each enormous galleon he built held his love within. When support for the navy was cut off so were my father’s projects there wasn’t enough manpower to disable the things so they just dragged them to a nearby shore and left them there. My father still walked among those ships some nights chasing off vandals and crabs he’d bring me along showing off the things he’d built for a young boy it was an unnerving experience. here were these massive warships hundreds of feet of wood and magic never to be finished. a love letter of craftsmanship not fully penned. The ships always felt just on the brink of something not dead but never alive. I always felt like i was being watched by something uniformed my father must have felt it too and though he delighted in being the guardian of his fleet there were some nights when he’d sit by a window and look out over the Anvil bay at the ships He called them “stillborn” and only now do I fully understand.

For now I walk through a world unfinished where color sound and motion are unwritten This is the World That Never Was this was the practice session the prototype plane that the gods built just to see if it would work This is Sybandis the Stillborn Nirn. It is simple to understand as i said it’s simply a testbed of cosmic idea. but no spirits died to make this world real there is no law no physics it is a world half-built even now as I speak I weave through unmoving floCks of skinless birds scale m0untains that have fallen away to reveal the gear work underneath and weave through the scaffolding caught in miD fall I am the only thing reAl here and even that might falter it is no wonder that the psijics have put mystic locks on the entire realm and even daedra avoid this silent place fearful that is wheels might hunger and new Earth-bones might be formed to even navigate this not-world to even breathe i must carry pieces of existence with me. A rock from a Tamriel shore a bottle of water not for drinking. alL to remind this world that I exist bUt one must take care, a foot out place, a stumbLe and you may turn a n errant wheeL or push down a rough piston and when you do the world chugs to life your Motion and heat giving it a brief stOp the biRds fly the scaffold falls and for a moment you might believe this world could live, should live. But it won’t you can’t turn these wheels without great cost. you see there is no sun in Sybandis the only thing that hangs in its bleak sky is the Eye. a great lidless pupil that sits there unmoving unblinking the only proof that Sybandis has a spirt. but it flares to life even for brief instant the eye that horrible eye slowly moves it gaze toward you. I don’t know what to know what happens when that eye finishes its search I have theories but none of which i want to test Sybandis is a unloving world and is best if it stays that way.

Sybandis

on Sybandis

As is known. the Arubis is a wheel with Mundus as its hub. the Earthbones alone stabilizing it and the myriad waters of Oblivion representing the gaps between the spokes. however what is not known is that the Aedra constructed a world before Mundus to test the wisdom of Magnus’s schema.

To call Sybandis a world is not entirely accurate, though as it lacks that divine spark that imbued our Mundus. It is a model for what was to come I traveled there once and I can say with certainty that there are few places in all the worlds so inimical to life for you see, Sybandis lacks Divine law -it has no Earthbones it after all is only a model A precursor it was built to test the very idea of building and no more it is essentially a free floating chunk of matter in the vast blinding expanse of Aetherius

As a consequence Sybandis is a static world time does not pass, nothing grows upon the barren soil, no currents move about deep in its oceans in that regard it is a failure. It succeeded however in persuading Magnus to adopt Lorkhan’s revisions to his blueprint even against his better judgement as the world the Aedra had first created was so lacking. However there are no divine revelations to be found there It would only interest a particular sort of scholar interested in the construction of artificial worlds and would see the result of such an endeavor firsthand.

Musings on power

(this is a collection of mutterings of the high foremer as recorded by his scribe Alammu73912)

Power energy materiality in potentia daedronics however you want to describe it that which allows motion the agent of change only made possible by the intermingling of Anu and padomay change and stasis IS and IS NOT exists infinitely but unusable in Aetherius spiraling constantly towards entropy in Oblivion all that is in the grey maybe requires some form of it and the sources are myriad Magnus Anulorkhan Mundanekinesis.

It requires power to move power the further away something is from the source the harder it is to move there and the more you lose along the way its slippery always jumping always wanting to escape except dracochrysalids but those require more power to produce than you can possibly get and aren’t very usefully anyways religious experiment idiot saliache keep trying.

when building infrastructure build close to power less waste efficient great construction requires enormous power and if the power dies the closest and greatest are the first and worst affected fundamental axiom. in magic in politics in theosophy no one seems to notice no one seems to learn.
