PROLOUGE
“Night falls on the plains surrounding the Dark Hunter’s supplies checkpoint, several Thornatus V9s passed through the gate the new dark hunter recruit was working as he checked them off the list. The five wheeled vehicles of Glatorian make that had been refurbished as transport vehicles for cargo to supply the organization with weapons and armor. The Dark Hunters were a faction of mercenaries with little to no morality unless payment was involved. Since they appeared in the Cryptex and took over, the central region had become a lawless wasteland where thieves, murderers and other undesirables lived around every corner. Toa existed here but the population was slowly dwindling day by day from defections to the Dark Hunters who were the only real enforcement outside of the six houses that inhabited the outer surrounding regions. But beyond their reach, The Dark Hunters were always recruiting new members. The Dark Hunter rookie manning the booth at the checkpoint had just finished checking through the last of the shipments for the day and was ready to change shifts when a spec of light blinking in the distance caught his attention. “Another one? I thought there were no more coming today.”putting down his data pad and exiting his dimly lit booth, the mercenary squinted as the vehicle approached. When it came into view it was clear something wasn’t right, the whole thing was ablaze and was speeding right towards him. The rookie dodged behind some barrels just in time for the vehicle to crash through his booth and hit the nearby tower before exploding in a fiery inferno. the Dark Hunter intern crawled out of his makeshift cover to inspect the damage, the Thornatus was completely wrecked and all the supplies it was carrying were either burnt or looted and the pilot was nowhere to be found. The strange part was that the empty container labeled ‘medicinal and food supplies’ were empty. “What the h-” before he could finish his sentence a looming dark shadow crashed down from the sky demolishing the wreck and knocking him back. When the dust settled a intimidating figure stood illuminated by the flames, it was over 13 feet tall clad in futuristic jet black armor that glowed icy blue in some places, it’s right arm was a massive rotary gun that had icy mist pouring from it’s six barrels, it’s face or rather thereof hid a ominous red eye underneath and on it’s back luminous bright blue glowing tentacle-like limbs sprouted from it’s back waving in the wind, and today wasn’t windy... The thing scanned it’s surroundings with a beam of light from it’s face plate and it’s tendrils examining the remains of the cargo vehicle for remaining supplies before moving to the crushed booth. The merc could practically feel the ground shake with every step it took as it passed his hiding spot, from what he could tell this thing from it’s tall stature, fancy armor and that strange whirring sound coming from it was no normal robber. Slowly he crept towards the the nearest weapon while keeping an eye on the strange tall figure while it continued to search through the remains of his station. When he finally found a working weapon, a midak sky-blaster blown off of the vehicle in the crash he stood up turned around taking aim with the recovered weapon at the thing while was occupied scanning the data-pad it had recovered from under what was left of his desk. The blaster fired off a high caliber volley that scored direct hits directly in the back below the tendrils, but to the merc’s despair they all bounced off of it’s armored shell without a scratch, it was then that he realized that this thing was entirely machine and not bio organic like he was. the machine monster swiveled around with lighting quick speed and weapons primed, and glowing angrily. The merc had no time to run when it sped past him and blocked him off from escape in a blink of an eye, after which he was torn to shreds by the Automaton’s mini-gun…
Chapter 1 [Investigation]
“Boss, there’s been another incident, same thing like last time, wrecked beyond salvage, medical and food supplies stolen and weapons and cash have been burnt.” a stout but heavily armored figure said to his another figure, a much taller and intimidating character “The more of these we find the less that makes sense, the only reason anyone would attack one of ours is for the money and guns, but who steals bandages and fruit?” the brooding figure shook his head before speaking in a rough but commanding voice “It’s quite simple Ancient, this thief intends to starve us to death and prevent us from getting our footing, if we can’t help our own then they may as well start asking questions, the kind that bring tear gangs apart from the inside out.” The tall leader strode towards one of the screens showing the previous day where a group of hired mercs were defending a caravan, then shooting at something before a black mass moving faster than the camera could catch took them all out with a single swipe of one of it’s back blades before gunning down the vehicles and taking the meds and food. The shorter figure threw his hands up in exasperation “That guy is tearing us apart out there! Eliminator, Spinner, Darkness, and even Gladiator are dead because of that him! if he even a he I don’t know and I don’t care, were losing good men and with all due respect The Shadowed One, I don’t entirely understand how you can be so calm about this while it bleeds us dry!” The Shadowed One continued to watch the video feeds on playback each one showing a Dark Hunter or local lowlife mercenary squad attempt to fight the mystery thief and each one ended with it over the bodies of the Hunter or mercs. “Ancient I need you to go out there and investigate last night’s disturbance, bring back anything you find be it living or dead, I want evidence!”
Ancient knew better than to question The Shadowed One’s authority, in his years of Being a Veteran Dark Hunter he knew that kind of questioning out loud often led to bodies or the ashes of said bodies being tossed out behind the fortress to rot, he should consider himself lucky to be out here alive. As he drove through the desert he contemplated the history he had read up about this place. This whole world was called The Cryptex, some legends say that it was created in secret by an angel, enslaved by the Scholar of the Deep…as a act of defiance against the Author of Evil, he created a place of light and refuge from the terrors spawned from beyond. Others mention the eight armed angel by a name, The Prodigal, the being that created the world they lived in long ago then abandoned it once it served it’s purpose. But Ancient didn’t care about some old fairy tales he just wanted to get this investigation done and over with. Ancient’s Thornatus drove past the skeleton of a Kaxium V3 double car motor bike picked clean by scavengers over the weeks, thieves and would be mercenaries often stripped abandoned vehicles like that one in a matter of hours and would either sell the parts to scrap peddlers or ambitious vehicle collectors for money or outfit vehicles of their own…sometimes they would be desperate enough to attack some unfortunate traveler and rob them of everything they had. Fortunately for Ancient no one, no matter how desperate or depraved would attack a Dark Hunter owned vehicle lest they incur the Organization’s wrath. When he finally reached the toll booth it looked more like a recent war zone, disembarking the vehicle he knelt down and grabbed a handful of bluish colored sand, it felt eerily cold like ice compared to the scorched brown sands all around him. The toll booth itself was completely obliterated confirming Ancient’s suspicions, whoever this was had tech beyond what they had. He had a hunch and a feeling that something terrible was coming...
Sylus opened his eyes to a blinding white backdrop “Where? oh yeah…that’s right weird portal stuff how long have I been stuck in here?” He reached over to rub remove his mask only to feel a stump where his prosthetic hand once was. He was confused for a second, why was his hand missing? then he remembered the bout with Karzahni and how the unhinged mad god had come back from death to try and kill him one last time before the world crumbled around them, Sylus hoped that would be the last time he would see him. Suddenly the white gave way to a deep blue with blurs of grey, the toa realized that wherever the box had taken him he had finally arrived…
Chapter 2 [The Dark Hunters]
Ancient had just about wrapped up his search convinced he had found nothing…again, he had just found the mutilated body of the rookie covered in blue crystal like needles, when a loud thunk made him turn around Rotukha launcher aimed at a strange sword that had appeared in the ground. Carefully approaching the strange weapon he picked it up feeling it’s weight in his hand and looking up at the sky, this fancy weapon didn’t belong in a world like this…unless it was one of those fancy mantle pieces that the wealthier clients would order, either way from it’s quality it looked like it would sell for a excellent price from a rich buyer looking to expand his collection. Then he looked down at the hilt and frowned spotting the H logo on the short pommel and his mood soured “Hero tech…garbage, will definitely hurt it’s value unless…” Taking the blade on one end and the hilt on the other he pulled until the blade separated from the hilt with relative ease. “There we go! much better without that scrap attached to it…a shame about the whole mess out her but this thing makes it worth the trip now lets’-” A tall armored suddenly crashed on top of Ancient’s vehicle, completely ruining the canopy and dislocating the right side’s set of wheels. Knowing better than to engage immediately on a unknown threat, Ancient deftly back-stepped behind a boulder to examine the newcomer from the sky to determine if this was a threat worth wasting ammunition on.
Sylus blinked the dirt out of his eyes, this wasn’t the most graceful landing he had made but thankfully nothing was broken. Getting up he noticed right away that he was in some sort of desert that spanned for miles and miles into the horizon. The only source of shade was some kind of tower of many all around him. He had landed in some kind of scrap heap that looked like it was a vehicle once. Getting up from the wreck he almost fell on his face again, this was the first time in a while since he had stood on solid ground and so far he was glad to be somewhere he could walk on. Immediately Sylus looked around for his blade, then noticing boot tracks in the sand leading behind some rocks, suspecting he wasn’t alone he picked up a stray blade from the vehicle’s remains and slowly approached the boulders.
The Veteran Dark Hunter watched from the top of the tower as the new figure approached his trap. He had placed the blade in the sun where the glistening of the sword would attract a nearby war-band of about seven Skrall bandits, If this worked as he intended the figure from the sky would have to fight them, if the new guy survived the encounter and drove them off he might consider recruiting him into the Dark Hunters…if he managed to defeat all of them however then…he might have found the thief responsible for all this, and he couldn’t take any chances especially with the Organization’s reputation on the line. But when he looked down he was startled to see the figure standing directly under the tower staring straight up at him. “What? how did he know where I was hiding? I’ve only seen one other move that fast!” Ancient thought looking over at the war-band’s last known location and seeing several bodies strewn about…all seven lied on the ground and were probably dead, at this he came to the conclusion that this guy thief or not was too dangerous to be left alive and leapt down from his perch priming his rapid fire Rotukha launcher and steadying his fall with his levitation boots…
The large warrior suddenly leapt from his place and began to descend on Sylus’s position bombarding him with disk-like projectiles. The Toa managed to dodge into cover behind the rocks but his foot got caught in a crevice leaving him open to a shot from the hovering figure’s weapon which made Sylus lose his physical coordination “I would introduce myself to you but given the current situation I think we’ll just cut to the part where I kill you, it’s just business kid, nothing personal.” He said landing next to him to get a closer look. Sylus couldn’t move as the Dark Hunter unsheathed a knife from a hidden compartment in his boot. Focusing, he activated his Mask of Inertia hoping to block the blow, instead to his dismay the warrior carefully wedged behind his mask and pried off his face landing in the sand in front of him “Nice try, but I’m not falling for a cheap trick like tha-” The Dark Hunter was cut off by a saw bladed shield to the side of his head knocked him out, more Skrall bandits had arrived after seeing their scouting party get decimated by a Toa, with a valuable looking blade and mask alongside the infamous Dark Hunter Ancient and were hoping to kill the one and hold the other ransom, and not in any particular order either. Sylus who was still under the effects of the Rotukha could only watch as three red and black cloaked figures dragged the Dark Hunter away and looted his bag and the remains of his vehicle, another came up to him and sniffed at him he could see the feral craze in it’s eyes while it picked up his mask and sword and stuffed both into a bag and left after the others into the sunset.
A full four hours passed before Ancient woke up bound to the tower and his bag full of equipment was empty. A few feet away the toa was still, unmoving from his attack but he could tell he was still alive. Silently cursing the Toa and himself for letting himself get ambushed he spotted a Skrall sword impaled into the tower above him. Carefully he shuffled around the pole until he was certain that the blade was on the opposite side. Kicking a foot to the ground he managed to get one of his levitation boots working and slowly lifted off the ground until the rope caught on the sharp part of the sword snapped off. Now free The Veteran looked around at his surroundings, bits and pieces of his stuff were scattered everywhere and his water supply had been drained dry. his Thornatus or what was left of it sat in the sand as if it had always been part of the desert to begin with. Grabbing the rope next to him he tied Sylus up and tossed him against the wreck of his vehicle “Alright, obviously your not who I’m looking for so I’ll make this brief since you can’t talk right now, your coming with me back to the fortress since your partial to blame for this, and we could use some new recruits so buckle up and shut up.” At the same moment the effects of the Rotukha wore off on Sylus “But…but what abo-” a smack upside the head knocked him out “What did I just say?! at least now you’ll be quiet.”
The tall ironclad walls of the citadel cast a great shadow over the desert as the sun rose over the horizon. day in and day out Dark Hunters would train and resupply here before they ventured out into the world to take on a new contract.
Chapter 3 [Nepharus]
“Overview; primary objective; acquire supplies for villagers/.../complete...Secondary objective; terminate any and all rouge elementals [toa]/.../currently pending...ERROR system tampering detected, attempting to auto-repair...ERROR, auto-repair.exe could not be launched."
The Machine stopped in it’s tracks as it met yet another failed maintenance attempt, it had been trying to rearrange it’s priority systems for weeks but found it was unable to for some reason, every attempt looping back to square one, it would be frustrating if it was programed to feel such emotions. Why was it stealing from these non-combatants? why did it prioritize the complete and utter decimation of the rouge race of elemental warriors known as toa, it’s primary program and the reason it existed as a secondary objective? these questions raced around in it’s data cortex unanswered, it attempted another purge.
"Attempting to realign secondary objective to front queue...loading/.../ERROR transfer failed...attempting to override primary objective with secondary...loading/.../Error 404 replacement task could not be found...attempting to delete primary objective/.../attempt failed."
It’s footsteps caused the ground to tremble with every step, a old vehicle shattered under it’s weight when it stepped on it, yet it continued to move effortlessly through the plains just as the sun began to rise over the horizon.
"ERROR...attempt to create trinary objective failed...searching database for unauthorized access ...searching/.../no malware detected...no manual tampering detected...no anomalies detected/.../accessing main weapons systems...PHASE LANCE;online...TEMPORAL WARP GENERATOR;online...CRYSTAL REPEATER;online...QUAZA CORE;functioning at 9999.38%...SELF-DESTRUCT;offline...[Marendar unit 1998] functioning at prime capacity...last maintenance occurred/.../7037 years ago"
The gates of a small town called Hallow-Heart, were soon illuminated by the rising sun as the machine dropped a intact crate full of supplies off at the run down well in the town center, behind it a lone figure in blue and yellow armor stood watching it deposit the goods “Back again? good, did you keep the supplies unburnt this time like I asked you to?” The Machine did not respond, instead it nodded back and pried the crate open showing the Medical and food supplies untouched. The smaller figure clapped his hands together “Good job! now get out of here before anyone sees you.” It left the town center in a flash activating it’s cloaking device and silently rocketing into the sky. Soon Matoran and Agori villagers began to exit their homes to meet the new day, among them was Bisola, a ga-matoran wearing a purple arm brace. The Matoran came to greet the figure with a polite bow, she was the town’s current leader after the previous one died in a recent raid from the Bone Hunters tribe. Her position was intended to be temporary however as The Hydrolion Company, one of the six wealthy houses and corporation that specialized in water related products such as armor appliances had sent her as their ambassador to not only stabilize the town’s economy but also to claim it as their property for the little mining village happened to be on top of a massive underground freshwater lake, a valuable resource they wanted to keep from their business rival the Geoscolia Excavations and Ordnance Co. “Bisola, come help me distribute the supplies to everyone, we’ve got a long day ahead of us.” More townsfolk gathered at central square until a half hour later when the last of the bounty was nearly expended. “Toa Nepharus, can I ask you a question?” Bisola asked, handing out a last basket of fruit. Nepharus turned from his inspection of the crates, taking note of the one full of glittering widgets, the currency that the matoran used on the world of Mata Nui. “Yes what is it that concerns you little one?” Bisola fidgeted with her Hydrolion branded arm brace to a more comfortable position, she always did that when she was anxious “I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything yet but…I heard from some travelers about that killer robot that’s been stealing from those Dark Hunters, they say they’ve seen it pass through here several times in the past month, and these crates…where are they coming from?” Closing the crate full of cash the Makuta straightened himself and breathed in sharply, had he become too careless? people had seen The Marendar enter this town, but they never saw it leave, he had made they couldn’t trace it back here, he couldn’t let the town know where these crates actually came from lest he risk causing a panic or worse…the ire of The Shadowed One. “Those rumors must have been from those stone working company people you work for or something right? they might even be making it up.” Bisola showed him the water droplet insignia on her shoulder “It’s Hydrolion, and we’re rivals with Geoscolia, we want the lake under us for fuel, they want to mine the minerals underneath remember?” Nepharus remembered too well how his first encounter with the mining company went on his first time wandering into the little town he now called home
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
(one year ago)
Nepharus found himself wandering the coarse sands on unfamiliar legs he had scavenged earlier. it had been two weeks of walking in a straight line through a endless plain towards what appeared to be a mountain range lined with blue and white buildings, did bodies need sleep? or need to eat anything? do they decompose? Nepharus asked himself these questions to stay sane in his aimless journey. Exactly on hour later a small welcoming village came into view much to the Makuta’s relief, but when he entered the front gate it looked less so. A crowd of official looking brown and yellow clad matoran were in the middle of a heated argument with another group in Blue and purple colors over a well, Nepharus inched closer for a listen “…Your people would rather exploit this valuable resource for another of your ‘liquid cooled’ thingambobs! and leave us with nothing!” one shouted “As we’ve said before all our products are made for the benefit of everyone, obviously you wouldn’t understand given our superior technology compared to your outdated methods of playing in dirt.” the official from the blue side, a turaga wearing a clean futuristic purple and white robe said calmly, ignoring the sneers and rude gestures from their opponents, he continued “We offer only the finest appliances to make life easier, and yet your people wouldn’t know what to a drop water if you were given a bottle of it.” the leader of the miners, a toa in heavy armor covered with construction stripes threw down his hard hat and leaned his filthy face in the CEO’s “Listen here you fancy up tight prick! and listen good, cause i’m only gonna say this once…We have been mining in these parts for far longer than you, we were here first! we built the homes and that everyone lives in down here, without us everyone people would still be living in caves!…and everyone knows that Dark Hunter that wrecked our equipment last week was hired by Hydrolion!“ A low murmur among the blue side was stopped by their leader banging her staff on the ground “We do not deal with Dark Hunters, clearly you need to check your sources before making false accusations.” The Toa scoffed and spat on the ground between them “You people have some nerve lying to our faces, don’t think for a second that we’re done here, we’ll be back.” The disgruntled miners all turned and left leaving Nepharus more confused until a voice whispered to him out from behind the town gate “You there! the one in that ugly yellow and blue armor! are you the Hunter we hired? come ere’ We got a job for you.” Hesitantly The Makuta shuffled up to the bulky hooded figure not intent on correcting him. Around the corner was a trio of shorter hooded figures wearing brown and yellow armor like the miners earlier “Alright we gotta make this quick, don’t want those greedy water thieves to hear us so here’s the job.” He pointed at a clean looking cart carrying four crystal clear barrels. We need you to punch some holes in some of those water coolers over there not big ones, just small enough that they’ll notice only when they’re empty, except leave one of em so you can put this in…” He brought out a jar filled with a oily substance“…fill that last tank with this Kraata blood and we’ll have your payment ready when you come back.” The leader gestured his two companions to open a large box full of silver gears and pieces “We have a deal?” Nepharus found that last line particularly discomforting for some reason but he finally spoke up “I-I’m sorry you must have me mistaken for someone else, I’m not...” the miner shook his head shrugging his colossal shoulders “Nah there’s no mistake mate, if that ain’t enough for ya we can sweeten the deal you see we at the Geoscolia Excavations and Ordnance Co. or GEO offer good pay for our employees unlike those water sucking Kinloka that don’t pay a single piece! we build homes, roads and anything else just to show that the old ways are the best ways.” He continued to offer the chest full of treasure placing a large hand on Nepharus’s shoulder “Hey I get it, you bounty huntin folks don’t care much for honest days work, but you’ll be doing the people of this town a favor and we help our own, think about it...”
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Nepharus had taken up their offer and sabotaged the water batteries and as a result the batteries shorted out on the way to the main hq and became useless. Hydrolion retaliated later by trying to hire him to sabotage Geoscolia with a bigger sum of cash but he refused their offer. Since then Nepharus settled down and became the town’s protector fending off bandits and animals, and as a result the towns residents started calling him ‘Toa Nepharus’. Later he would come across the remains of the Marendar and repair it, reprogramming the android to help from the shadows. “You know I think I saw you talking to someone earlier today, do you have friends that you know?” The Makuta sighed internally, relieved that he could turn the subject elsewhere “Yes, another member of my toa team, but he’s very shy and doesn’t like to talk to anyone but me, please understand that.” While Bisola was skeptical she took his word for it, while the companies would come back for another go at taking this little town but for now she and the others could rest easier knowing about their ‘guardian angel’ in the shadows.
Chapter 4 [Firefight]
Sylus shook the sleep from his eyes and looked around the pitch black room, he was tied to a chair with only a faint light illuminating around him. “Finally awake? good, let’s shed some light on the situation you’ve found yourself in.” a rough voice from the other side of the room said as shutters began to open up to the night sky letting him see the inside of the chamber and his captors more clearly. There was the short armored warrior from earlier, standing next to him a taller intimidating figure holding a staff looked down on him “My best agent informs me that either you may be a threat to us or a valuable asset, skipping the formalities. We are the Dark Hunters this you probably already know if not then you will, the greatest mercenary group in this festering sand pit of a desert, you may refer to me only as The Shadowed One.” Sylus had heard about the leader of this mercenary group and had seen him only once in the Kingdom universe but never up close, The Shadowed One continued “Ancient, show us the footage from the night before.” The Dark Hunter veteran pressed a button on a remote that lit up a screen built into the window, on video was the recent attack by the shadowy machine monster on the outpost, followed by a fast forward to daytime where Ancient had arrived and witnessed the arrival of the toa from the sky before the camera turned to static. The Shadowed One turned off the footage and glared at the bound toa “Are you the one responsible for roughing up my associate and stealing his equipment? speak!” When he didn’t answer The dark leader gestured for Ancient to brandish a white hot blade and held it up to his throat “Cooperate or else I’m going to have my men dump pieces of your body out back I am not in a good mood today so don’t push your luck.” he could feel the blade slightly touching him and it felt like the worst pain ever “I didn’t steal anything! some gibbering freaks jumped that guy over there while he was busy talking about how he was gonna kill me!” The Shadowed One stepped in lowering the blade Ancient held with one finger and placed another on Sylus’s chin muttering to himself about how Ancient loved his pre-kill dialogues. “Then how come I don’t believe you? you might as well…” a fireball suddenly smashed against the glass shattering it into hot shards. “It’s him again…is it my turn already? fine, I’ll deal with him this time and make sure to make it clear that we don’t want him here.” Ancient sighed as he primed his launcher before leaping out the window. The Shadowed One without looking away from his captive took out a remote and closed the shutters “As I was saying before that rude interruption, I don’t believe you but then again I’m not one to pass up a potential-” Another explosion shook the room and melted a hole in the shutters, a new voice called out in a threatening tone “Come out and fight me you spineless weakling! stop sending your lackeys to try and kill me and do it yourself!” The Shadowed One let out a audible groan and placed his fingers on the bridge of his nose, “Do I have to do everything myself? no it would be too easy to just zap him right then and there…hmm but…” he turned to Sylus and in a quick motion picked up the chair with one arm and held it over the side of the building from the new hole outside “…perhaps this is how you will repay your ‘debt’ to us…if you survive that is.” uncovering a hidden blade from under his cape the Dark hunter’s leader sliced the rope binding the Toa’s arms letting him fall of the side of the citadel towards the flames below.
I awaken in ruins of my own making
my surroundings are dire and bleak
the world I knew the one where I was king
has cast me out as weak…
the sky bleeds crimson red
In this place I have been forsaken
In my heart I have no dread
my desires have left me craven…
for I am king no more
I have no wish to die
but trapped behind a closed door
I am hidden from the eye…
Smoke and fire blurred Sylus’s line of sight the chair and restraints that held him had broken on impact with the ground but his whole body ached, without the mask of inertia he was as vulnerable as everyone else. “You…I don’t recognize you.” a bright flash of searing heat cleared the smoke away to reveal a flaming figure stood above him on a wrecked aircraft. He had bright red and silver heavy armor, a cannon in one arm and a claw holding a melted blade in the other, his posture suggested royalty and authority but his eyes behind his tusked face said otherwise, burning with hate and rage. “Your one of The Shadowed One’s new flunkies? you don’t look like you’d stand up better than the last guy I killed, you see I like to make a little game out of my visits here. Every time I come over I make sure to put at least one of Shadowed One’s guys in the dirt before I leave you get me?” Sylus got himself up and pointed at the fiery being “Quit the formalities and get to the point are you going to blabber on or are you gonna tell me who you are?” The burning figure jumped down from his perch, the impact making a bubbling splat as the ground underneath him instantly turned to molten slag. “Ah…I forget, yes…you may call me Tyrant and you will be my status quo for tonight…”
cutting cutting, breaking breaking
the key is here, for the making
salvation is not, worth taking
but this is my, final breaking…
hide it hide it, keep it keep it
I’ll take it to, what I created
freedom is worth, every digit
my fingers gone, I will be sated…
drowning drowning, sinking sinking
keeping up this, vacant facade
gateway open, no time for thinking
I rise again, for I AM GOD…
The heat was beginning to wear Sylus down, he couldn’t keep going like this unless he found a way to douse the flames. there was a fancy looking white water barrel next to Tyrant but that would mean he would have to get close, and without a mask or a right hand he didn’t know how he was going to make that happen. (“No mask no weapons, stuck with a maniac for who knows how long…hey what’s that?”) a blinking object in the rubble opposite to him caught his attention, stealthily he made his way towards the pile while avoiding Tyrant’s rampage as he looked for him “Come out ‘hero’ I promise it won’t end too quickly…” sifting through the remains he uncovered a unusual looking small Kanohi mask made for a matoran, it had no visible eye holes but possessed a number of various lens and scopes. It was a bit of a tight fit but as soon as he placed it on his face the world as he saw it changed. he could see Tyrant’s outline through the wall behind him and several others behind a nearby blocked door. peeking over the cover he gazed at the barrel and without warning it exploded extinguishing the flames and drenching the ex-Dark Hunter much to Tyrant’s annoyance “You insolent fool! look at what you’ve done! looks like I’ll just have to settle for tearing your limbs off!” With a roar Tyrant tackled the toa pinning him to the ground landing a few savage blows to his face before being kicked off. Getting to his feet he picked up a nearby piece of scrap and swung it into the charging ex Dark Hunter, as he crashed into the wall, “Take a hike! I’m not playing your stupid game you loony!” Sylus scrambled around for something else to use when the wall exploded in a blaze, Tyrant walked out of the inferno glowing a bright fiery orange “Your really pissing me off worm, how about you lie down and DIE ALREADY!!” The Dark Hunter exile charged up his cannon and fired a swiping shot at Sylus. The flaming missile was moving too fast too dodge, closing his eyes the toa raised his arms to defend himself with what little he had. But instead of the missile exploding on impact a unknown force from his hand deflected the projectile back at Tyrant who was to shocked to move. The projectile blasted him over the wall and over the horizon where the sun had just begun to creep into the night sky. The sealed door finally burst open as Dark Hunters rushed out with The Shadowed One following behind, Ancient rushed to his side and recounted how the traitor caught him off guard and trapped him under a pile of rubble “Enough, where is our ‘guest’?” a nearby Hunter pointed towards a open wall and a distant figure running off in the distance. The Shadowed One shook his head and snatched up one of the Hunter’s radios pressing a switch on it “Gadget, lets see that new invention of yours in action, give us a good show will you?”Soon, a spinning drone revved past the group and gave chase after it’s prey. The Shadowed One picked up a piece of the barrel that exploded and examined it closely, this newcomer would prove to be very very interesting…
Chapter 5 {The Hero’s Origin pt.1}
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
20 years ago before Teridax’s betrayal, core universe
The sun rose over the island of Stelt, as the various inhabitants began their day, among them a Fa-matoran walked among a crowd of other matoran like him towards the castle. “Lightstones, tablets, keys…where? ugh.” discreetly he tapped the shoulder of the matoran of his nearest to him and whispered “Drezelk, hey Drezelk…did you misplace my project again?” Drezelk rolled his eyes and whispered back “What’s so important about some rocks anyways Sylus? you’ve been working on those things all week long and they still don’t work.” Sylus adjusted his mask and kept walking almost bumping into a pair of Steltian guards, he whispered back “They aren’t just ‘some rocks’ these are going to be the next generation in personal defense, my gravity spheres will be the key to me getting out of this place once and for all!” He pointed to a sign that read ‘Grand Invention Contest Today! held by visiting representative to The Brotherhood Makuta’ '“Winner gets free trip to paradise! I’ll finally get to see the world outside this slum and make a name for my self!” Another matoran shoved his shoulder into Sylus’s “Ey quit talkin about that, yur gonna git us in trouble again! and I’m not doin another night cleaning the docks!” Sylus huffed, he was one of a group of six Fa-matoran performers for a ‘circus’ of sorts where they would perform magnetism related tricks to entertain the local lords that owned the lower bazaar area around the docks, in their free time they ran a stall selling novelties like sparklers and Kanoka disks designed for stunts, he was tired of being bottom seller he wanted more. “Fine, say what you want but when I win this don’t expect to hear from me again.”

Sylus learned a new lesson of the desert that morning; he hated sand, and it was made especially apparent when some kind of tire finally caught up to him and sprayed him with some kind of goop that hardened on contact with his body and left him immobilized face down in the stuff as the thing dragged him all the way back to the Dark Hunter’s base. He sat once again in the dark room staring at Ancient across from him who stared back silently, “Boss told me that you fought off Tyrant by yourself, and that you ‘saved my life’ you know what else he said? that I’m getting too old to be doing solo missions anymore and that I need a partner to assist me…care to guess who that is?“ The silhouette of The Shadowed One came up from behind him “You, that’s right…your one of us now and last night proved you might be Dark Hunter material after all.” Sylus could hardly understand what was going on, him a Dark Hunter? he’d never believe that they would be impressed enough by him to welcome him into the ranks “The Dark Hunters…the same ones from the stories? the same faction that stood toe to toe with the Brotherhood of Makuta? those guys? ho oh hold on and you think I’m gonna work for you guys as a agent right?” “That is correct, unless you want to try your chances at surviving out in the desert, yes we are the Dark Hunters, besides what we already established WE are the law down here, nothing happens here without our say and our enemies are either in hiding or are crushed like bugs…and you better not be our enemy, your move.” Sylus was faced with two choices; one would cost his freedom and one his life, if he chose either he would lose something, The Shadowed One had him cornered, “Alright…I accept your offer… Pleased, the dark leader clasped his hands together “Smart move, that’s the trick to negotiation, more often than not they always chose the path of living another day when offered death or service…remember this next time you have a interrogation.” with a wave of his hand the bond holding the toa down clicked open and he was tossed the multi-scoped mask from earlier “As compensation and a incentive, you may keep that mask you used, they’re dime a dozen anyways, and while your at it head down with Ancient to the Armory, Gadget our local quartermaster will get you better equipped, welcome aboard we hope you won’t disappoint us.”
Chapter 6 [The Archive]
“Is he always like that? the big speeches and threats?” Sylus asked examining the strange mask further on his way to the Armory, while the mask didn’t respond Ancient did “Of course he’s the one in charge for a reason, there’s probably a whole list of enemies he’s made over the course of the millions of years he’s been alive.” Sylus did a double take, while Ancient read his expression and answered “An accident involving Metru Nui and a mask of time long time ago made him much older than he looks, it’s probably best if you keep that info to yourself, we just got you don’t want to lose another recruit.” When they reached the Armory doors a plume of vile smelling smoke billowed from underneath and the sounds of panic could be heard on the other side. the door burst open and a soot covered figure with multiple mechanical arms staggered out clutching a armful of papers in each arm “Greetings, you seem to have caught me at a most…unfortunate juncture, the Armory is closed for repairs until further notice.” Ancient squinted through the smoke “Gadget what happened here?” Gadget adjusted his eye piece and handed him one of the papers. “You experimented on…What?!” the Quartermaster bowed deeply “I apologize…the incident last night broke through into my lab and [~Improvise.~] caused a reaction, until the quarantine zone is cleared I cannot grant you weapons but I can offer prosthetic assistance to our newest recruit.” his red optic scanning Sylus up and down until it focused on his arm “You appear to be damaged, let me take you to the Archive…where we keep all the special ordinance and equipment.” he said gesturing for the toa to follow “I’m suppose to stay with Ancient.” the cyborg did not respond and continued to walk down the hallway towards a large ornate door. “What is place anyways?” Gadget stopped walking, and turned around in a robotic fashion “Here as in locally? you are in New Odina, the Dark hunter’s base of operations in the desert area that makes up the center of this realm, on a planetary scale?, you are in The Cryptex, a realm of unknown and unpredictable qualities, and variables, I dislike it here.” the giant door creaked open into a vast space illuminated by blue glowing glyphs , all along the walls were glass doors lining as far as the eye could see, each containing a weapon or mask or some sort of item. “Surrounding us is a vast mountain range that forms a bowl around us. Although it never rains the risk of flooding is very high…” Gadget opened one of the closets and brought out a table with a prosthetic arm on display, carefully he removed the limb from it’s resting spot and held it up to the light. Sylus looked at the half melted stump where his arm use to be, it was a fake hand so it could easily be fixed, ”Haven’t you tried making a flying machine to escape?” Gadget adjusted a bolt on the elbow joint making a sigh that sounded more like steam escaping a pot “There is no escaping from the Cryptex, we tried believe me we really did but we never could find a way out.” another bolt screwed into place, “There is a ceiling in place that mimics a real sky and sun, suggested attempts to breach this barrier are inadvisable perhaps due to the possible disruption of the atmosphere and leading to mass death by asphyxiation.” The Cyborg finished the arm calibrating the fingers and pressing a final plate with a click “This is a B.L.A.M., the Ballistics and Logistic Armory Multi-tool, standard issue for all Hunters, save for adjustments for your…[~Adapt.~] condition.” With a snap the arm slotted right into place and changed it’s colors to match the toa’s own armor scheme, Gadget looked pleased with the development “The armor’s adaptive system allows it to adjust to the wearer’s body type and shape, yours has adjusted nicely…inside your gauntlet’s fingertips are four different tools that are invaluable to a Hunter’s survival this harsh world…usually these are separate tools but The Shadowed One gave explicit permission to hand this particular model off to you…it would seem that he sees potential in you.” the Quartermaster pointed at one of the glove’s fingers “firstly is the lock-picking module in your index finger…I designed it personally and it has been tested with many kinds of locks.” A small pick appeared out of a hole in Sylus’s finger. “Secondly the vibro-blade, inside your middle finger, it is self explanatory what it does, but it is strong enough to cut through protosteel and antidermis armor, take care not to cut or otherwise mutilate yourself with it.” a tiny vorpal blade poked from the middle finger of the gauntlet, Sylus immediately imagined all the rude gestures he could do with this upgrade, Gadget continued “The ring finger is a micro tracker missile, it has a 80 mile radius when it sticks to a target and it’s location can be tracked using the tac-pad on your wrist, you only have one…use it wisely.” Gadget pointed towards the gauntlet’s thumb “This…is the blow torch, especially effective at welding things like doors and metal shut, remember to keep the fuel tank for it located under your arm filled, and that is all you need to know about the B.L.A.M. do you have any questions regarding it’s functions?” Sylus examined his new arm closely, it felt like it was a actual organic appendage and not a artificial copy, what kind of tech-knowledge did this guy have to make it feel so real? “Um…sorry just trying to think of something about the arm…oh! what does the pinkie finger do?” he said. “The pinkie finger…does nothing ‘jack squat’ as you would call it, it is just a ordinary joint, admittedly, I could not think of anything to put inside or anything that would fit inside, but feel free to use it as a storage space for small objects like rocks or whatever you semi-organics like so much.” a alarm bleeped from his and Sylus’s arm before Gadget answered it, Ancient’s voice could be heard “The Shadowed One requests the both of you in the main hall for a briefing on a personal mission, the three of us are to escort him to The Crystal Palace Casino north of here, pack something warm will you?” Gadget said nothing but began walking out of the Archive, Sylus soon followed behind he made a mental note to come back here for some sightseeing later. But first he had to figure out what this Crystal Palace was.
Chapter 7 [Gambler’s Gorge]
“It’s the same dream over and over again…” Nepharus said to Bisola who was sitting on a bench in front of her house, “It was a large empty place but I don’t know where it was except that it was very dark and a symbol I don’t recognize, then there was some kind of bright circle with six objects in it…” Bisola leaned in closer “What kinds of things were they?” she asked, Nepharus gazed out east towards the mountain range “The details were vague but I remember a mask of some kind, then there was this glowing red stone, and the last I remember was a dagger in my hand, but it was the same dagger I always carried with me, the dream ended before I could see the rest.” Bisola pondered the dream that her friend described, she had a close enough relationship with Nepharus that he could confess to her that he was a Makuta possessing the corpse of a deceased Dark Hunter, and in return she kept his secret, however she did not know about his connection with the Marendar. a horn blew from one of the watch towers overhead “Bone hunters! coming in from the west!” people scrambled for their homes and locked their doors, by the time the last of the villagers was inside the raiding party had arrived. Nepharus stood firm as the leader, a big nasty looking steltian brute lumbered to the front “Hey you! we have you surrounded give us your goods and the lake and we won’t wipe this crummy town off the map.” The Makuta didn’t answer instead he curled his fingers together, the glowing orange orb in his hand faintly glittering “You gonna answer me punk? or am I going beat you into the ground until I reach the lake myself?” the other bandits began to chuckle The Makuta still didn’t move, instead he brought up the hand with the orb and crushed it. Immediately time grinded to a halt all around him, the thugs frozen in place suspended in guffaw, Nepharus strode over to their leader and unlocked his staff’s weapon the Weeping Bell, a censer on a chain that fumed a strange blueish mist. Slowly he circled the brute and his goons eyeing the various trophies and weapons on them all while swinging the Bell around in circles, the fumes it created turned to liquid that froze mid drop in the chrono stasis. a peculiar piece of paper sticking out of the steltian’s belt pouch caught his attention, he gingerly plucked it from it’s resting place taking care not to touch the raider boss lest he be pulled out of the frozen time. When he was done with the circle he backed off making sure to stand in the same spot as before and released his grip on the orb. The second the stasis wore off the droplets hit the ground and flash froze all of the Bone Hunters, Nepharus brushed himself off and strode towards the leader “Could you repeat that? I have bad hearing sorry.” The long shadow of the Marendar loomed overhead and landed amidst them shattering the ice and knocking the thugs unconscious. After it picked them and threw them into the nearby mud pit it trudged off to continue it’s search for more supplies. the villagers who hid indoors all rushed outside to cheer for their toa hero. Bisola came up to congratulate him “That was amazing! we are grateful to have you as our protector Nepharus!” the Makuta shook his head sheepishly “I did what I do best, and it’s me who’s grateful for having people to care about.” After the crowd cleared, Nepharus examined the note he had taken from the bandits, the symbol of the Crystal Palace Casino embroidered on it’s back it read;
Congratulations!

(“Fifth sun cycle? that’s tonight! hmm, looks like I’ll have to have the Marendar defend the village tonight…but that mask, could it be the same one from my dream?” and where did I leave my cards again?)
“Boss if I may? why are we heading over to the palace again? you know we’re not exactly…welcome there.” Ancient asked over the radio inside the Shadowed One’s personal Baranus V7, a chariot vehicle being pulled by a tamed Kana Ra bulls. Riding beside him was a Kaxium V3 manned by Gadget and Sylus. The vehicles had been modified with extra armor and hidden weapons, The Shadowed One’s chariot was five times larger than normal with all the weapons hidden inside, requiring two rahi bulls to pull it. The Crystal Palace was a large castle built out of prismatic crystals found in the northern region of the Cryptex, it was widely regarded as a neutral zone where weapons were outlawed, it was also known for it’s famous casino where the annual cards tournament was held every year. When they reached the gates they were met by the bouncer, a hulking four armed behemoth that reminded Sylus of his encounter with Umarak the Destroyer, although the Destroyer was short compared to this guy and far more menacing too. the chariot kept moving on while The Shadowed One leaned over the side of the vehicle “Voporak my old…acquaintance, fancy yourself a new job eh? I don’t blame you for wanting to-” however the bouncer wasn’t having any of it by placing his foot on the front of the vehicle “…No handouts…papers or get lost…” was the simple answer, grumbling under his breath the dark leader produced the parchment and handed it to him. After a second of squinting to read the tiny paper he pocketed it and stepped aside “Your good…go…”But just as the Kaxium was about to pass Voporak stopped them and pointed at Gadget “Not you…cheaters not allowed in the boss’s casino.” Gadget gestured for Sylus to exit the side car “I will stay behind and [~Adapt.~]…protect our vehicles.” The toa could feel the cold hard stare of the brute as he passed by into the palace’s main lobby. The Shadowed One placed his staff on a nearby weapon rack and pointed at a large neon sign that read ‘Casino’ then leaned down at Sylus’s level whispering “Listen carefully cause we won’t get a second chance at this if you fritz this up…you are going to make sure I leave this competition as the winner, swap some decks, place a mirror behind the table, set something on fire I don’t care just get it done.” A strangely colored Makuta walked past them, but they paid no attention to him “I should also tell you that this is a neutral space, so no violence whatsoever, I won’t be waiting for you if you blow your cover.”
Gadget finished parking the Kaxium behind a snowbank when he spotted lights flashing from a nearby gorge, The Cyborg nonchalantly activated a shoulder mounted drone to float downwards while it’s camera would feed info directly into his cybernetic eye. In the chasm was a lit cave entrance guarded by two heavily armed Maxolis robot guards with the Symbol and colors of Sundar metal-works, the drone slipped on by to investigate further…
Everyone sat around a large table to prepare for the big game, several random matoran and agori of high stature sat at the table along with the unusual looking makuta and a broad shouldered toa sitting opposite of Sylus. “Welcome contestants welcome all! to the annual cards tournament! I’m your gracious host Crakus and tonight’s lucky winner will be decided in a series of card games that range from beginner to expert at random!” Crakus announced “I would say good luck but well...luck don’t get you far out here so let’s get it on!” the giant wheel on the wall of the casino spun until it came to a stop on a red symbol labeled ‘go fish’ Sylus who sat nearby looked confused until a turaga sitting next to him spoke up “It is a game where a person asks for a specific card from other players until you have four of a kind…I have not heard of you before and I know everyone here…what is your name toa?” Sylus despite his suspicions played coy “I’m Sylus and yes I’m not from here I come from a far away island.” the turaga chuckled and held out a business card “Turaga Velnes, CEO of Hydrolion, it is my pleasure to get to know you more, because I don’t recall any islands in this closed off box of a world that we live in.” Sylus flinched, had he just blown his own cover? Velnes placed a hand on his shoulder “Oh no need to get worried, I’ve seen you walking around with The Shadowed One, are you his new bodyguard?” “Bodyguard? yeah I’m his new bodyguard, you have a problem with that.” The Shadowed One shoved a arm into his back, a silent warning to shut up, Velnes sighed “Easy there friend I mean no disrespect, I simply want to enjoy a fun game of cards with some…’friends’ if you will.” he said gesturing to the toa across from him socializing with the makuta, he leaned in closer and whispered “That idiotic brute is a miserable excuse for a toa…say, I have a proposal for you…something of a…well paying contract if I might say.” Sylus whispered back “You want me to make that guy lose it all don’t you?” Velnes put up a fake expression of surprise “Oh no, how horrible it would be to lose all your hard earned savings because of a unlucky hand…I hope that no one would do something like, ah I don’t know…rig his card deck with a exploding business card, such a unfortunate and ironic turn of events would force him out of the casino and cause his company to file bankrupt, what a terrible plan you’ve come up with...but not a bad idea.”
Toa Boridus slapped Nepharus on the back and laughed, then pulled him in close whispering “My friend, look…I don’t want to alarm you, but I think that no good old hack is up to something, he’s askin that Dark Hunter bloke nex to ‘im to help cheat the ole darn game no doubt about it, so let’s get our hands dirty…you go an follow that guy when he leaves to do the cheatin and stop him, I’ll make sure that the little town of yours gets what it deserves all roight, just do a favor for your ol pal Boridus and you’ll be set for life.” Nepharus had no idea what to say but decided to just nod and go along with it. A few minutes into the game and nothing changed “Do you have any aces?” “no, go fish” this went on until one of the matoran suddenly slammed his cards on the table “I win! four of a kind! four of a- huh?” when he looked down his cards, one of his spades was actually a heart “oh…nevermind” The leader of the Dark Hunters barked a laugh “Shame, it looks like your deck wasn’t a winner after all! better get your vision checked.” all around the table everyone laughed, the ashamed matoran shrunk down in his seat trying to be as small as possible. The Shadowed One turned to Sylus who silently handed him a spade card from under the table… An hour later the host came on stage “Alright folks that about does it for go fish lets change it up for round two!” the wheel spun again and landed on ‘Poker’ murmurs of approval echoed around the room. Boridus called over to Velnes “Aw yeah! ready to lose old timer!?” the turaga scoffed “As if I would let you win, barbarian.” Another round of cards and a pair of armed guards burst in and drag off one of the matoran who is kicking and screaming while still holding on to his cards. The game continues on regardless, Velnes chuckles to himself holding a fake counterfeit card under his robe “Two down, four more to go then it will be just me to claim the prize...” his gaze shifted over to Sylus who was struggling to understand the game “…Of course It’ll mean that I’ll have to share it with my ‘business partner’ when this is over…I’ll almost feel bad when he has a terrible tumble into the drifts outside, ah well…what happens in Crystal Palace stays in the Crystal Palace.”
Gadget’s drone clung to the cave’s ceiling as it spied on a red and silver figure overseeing the movement of barrels filled with molten slag metal and what appeared to be some Bone hunters disguised as Palace guards. “Get this slag positioned under the table! you two make sure that idiot doesn’t ruin our plan! and you, go down to the front of the palace and rig their vehicles to blow, kill that tin can if you have to but make sure that The Shadowed One has no way to escape our grasp!” Gadget considered for a moment if he should be concerned but decided to recall the drone and do some rigging himself, firstly he placed some timed explosives underneath the Baranus and Kaxium and trudged through the snow towards a vent on the side of the wall. Once he opened the grate he climbed inside and began crawling through towards the main casino over the head of a sleeping Voporak.
"You can’t do this! AREO will hear-know about this trick-deceit!” a le-matoran shouted as he was dragged from the table. the last remaining players at the board were Boridus, Velnes, Nepharus, Sylus and The Shadowed One “Just the five of us ey? I hope you got a good hand cause your going home empty handed otherwise.” The Shadowed One sneered tapping his clawed finger on the table several times, Sylus was told that this was the signal to forfeit and head behind the stage to cut the power just as the next round would be announced. “Oh, I’m sorry I have to go I just remembered that I left my keys outside, I surrender my hand.” Boridus snorted “It's good mate, just means the winnin pots a little bigger!” he laughed shoving Nepharus in the shoulder, his signal to leave as well, “I…have to go as well forgot to water my plants! got to go!” Velnes looked on with a stoic expression as the makuta left the table “Cavorting with a makuta now are we Boridus? for shame.” Boridus gave him a look colder than the weather outside “And I thought turaga were suppose to guide toa to their destinies not exploit them for money.” Velnes laughed and the three continued the game of poker.
Sylus rounded a corner into another section of the palace, a museum hall full of various items from kanoka disks, to petrified kraata. One display caught his attention though, a glass case containing his Kanohi Felwiin and his sword! Forgetting about his goal he attempted to cut open the case with his vibro blade when Nepharus stepped up behind him “You know the sign says not to touch the glass right?” Sylus spun around so fast he almost tripped “Who are you? were you following me? what’s up with those ridiculous looking wings? and why are you carrying around ‘that’ huh?” Nepharus looked at his Weeping bell confused, Sylus leaned against a statue with a smug expression and a mock imitation “You know the sign says no weapons right?” The makuta was bewildered by this, did those blades really look that ridiculous? “T-this? this isn’t a weapon! it’s my gardening tool! and these aren’t ‘wings’ now be careful your going to knock over-” The statue Sylus was leaning on tipped over and was about to shatter when Nepharus used his powers to freeze time for three seconds and quickly shove the statue back into place “Be. careful! do you know what that even means?! ugh never mind, tell me what your doing in this part of the Palace trying to steal a mask and sword from the museum and I’ll leave you be.” the toa crossed his arms “I told you I’m getting my keys.” Nepharus raised an eye “If that’s the case the front door is that way, your not telling me the truth.” finally Sylus gave in and pointed at the display case “That mask in the display case belongs to me, some thieves stole my mask and sword from me and now I finally found them here, if I can’t get them back now then I don’t know if I’ll ever get a opportunity again!” Nepharus thought for a moment, clearly he must have been sent out here to sabotage the tournament, but after seeing how everyone in that room tried to out cheat each other he decided to come clean with his reason “To be honest I believe you, look I get it someone stole from you and you want it back, and while thievery is something I do not condone, I’ll help you if you can help me in return.” Sylus looked around the room and nodded, Nepharus swung his Weeping bell and shattered the case allowing Sylus to retrieve his equipment “Ok mr. colorblind, let’s hear it.” Nepharus frowned and huffed “…and here I was beginning to think you were a decent guy, anyways there’s this mask…” A crash from the ceiling vent alarmed the both of them when Gadget landed in between them “toa Sylus…come with me…a sudden development requires your expertise.” Nepharus and Sylus followed behind, when the cyborg turned around and pointed at the makuta “You are not required…leave.” Sylus held up his hands “It’s ok! he’s with me.” Gadget stared for a second before a red beam of light from his eye scanned the makuta “You are clean of any listening devices, come your expertise may be needed as well…”
The trio entered a large basement under the Casino, it was filthy with all sorts of dusty old props including a taxidermy bust of a pale white muaka cat kept inside a cage “Is that…the pale muaka? the same one that killed the previous owner of the Crystal Palace?” Nepharus asked “Correct, the albino muaka was created by a makuta as a commission by the owner who afterwards had the beast hunted and killed, records showed the seemingly lifeless creature coming to life during a presentation [~Understand.~]…and killing the owner to which it became inert once again…” Nepharus shuddered as they passed the lifeless bust. the far wall of the room looked like someone had drilled a tunnel through, a faint trail of slag could be seen trailing to a far end of the basement, just around a corner was a gathering of ta-matoran and Skrall in hazard outfits placing barrels of slag in a stockpile, behind them were two maxolis guards flanked by a familiar face “Tyrant, what’s he doing here?” Sylus whispered , Gadget scanned the symbol on one of the robots “Sundar, metal working company; produces metal alloys for everyone in the wastelands from buildings to vehicles, current CEO; Ty-” Gadget is suddenly engulfed in electricity, shorting out his electronic as his eye goes black. Behind them four skrall wielding disk launchers loaded with stun kanoka shove the two out into the open, Tyrant looks down with a haughty sneer “Well well well, look who decided to join us for the fireworks show? the idiot toa and the turncoat loser.” He pointed at a pit in the ground gesturing for the skrall to throw them down there “Your just in time to watch me get my rightful revenge on your boss when I blow him sky high along with the rest of those scumbags!” he tried to summon a flame but it sputtered out in his hand “and what about the rest of the innocent people inside? your going to blow them up too?” Nepharus shouted from the bottom of the pit, Tyrant thought about it then shrugged “It’s their fault for getting in the crossfire…” he laughed and walked away leaving them alone in the pit. Nepharus paced around the arena testing his time powers on the walls of the arena, swinging the Bell at the walls but nothing seemed to work he tried to stop time and punch them but only hurt himself, Sylus meanwhile was sitting cross legged staring at a wall “Could you stop doing that…whatever it is your doing? it’s making my head hurt and I’m trying to think here.” Nepharus tried to climb the wall but it’s edges were too smooth “Are you just going to sit there while people are in danger?” Sylus pressed a hand against the wall and focused, something was on the other side of the metal wall, he had a idea. “I have a plan you just gotta go along with it.” getting up he knelt down, fist pressed into the floor and he activated his Felwiin mask of inertia “Hit me as hard as you can…as many times as possible.” The makuta was taken aback “You want me to beat you to death?! have you gone crazy?” Sylus pressed harder “Trust me! if you want to see the surface again then hit me!” hesitantly Nepharus swung his weapon at Sylus and struck him in the back, the blow grazed off like it was nothing “Your stronger than you look yellow and blue, do it again!” several strikes later left the makuta exhausted “Ok…but what does that even has to do with-” With all the strength he could muster along with the built up inertia, Sylus punched the wall as hard as he could, it immediately bent and shattered into pieces revealing a passage behind it “What kind of Kanohi mask was that? how did you know to punch through that wall?” Sylus unsheathed his sword “The mask? I hit whoever hits me harder, as for the wall? I don’t know… come on lets warn everyone about the assassination.”
The Shadowed One leaned back in his seat, currently he was watching toa Boridus and turaga Velnes argue “You cheating bog snake! I ought to pummel you roight here roight now!” he snarled holding up the smoldering remains of his favorite deck “Perhaps you are using inferior cards.” Velnes calmly stated, the toa of stone seethed with so much rage he could have made for a good toa of fire ”Choose. your. next. words. wisely…elder. this isn’t over.” Boridus slammed his fist on the table and stormed out of the room, just as Sylus and Nepharus ran inside carrying Gadget’s body “Boss! we have to leave now! there’s a trap under the basement and this whole place is going to blow!” Velnes recoiled with indignation “What!? preposterous! this is neutral space! who would do such a thing?” he turned to the Shadowed One “How do I know this isn’t a ruse just to get my guard down?!” Suddenly Voporak burst into the room and tore the giant wheel off of it’s hinges, behind it was a airtight case with the mask of time inside. Crakus stood in his way at the door “W-what do you think are you doing? this…this is coming out of your payche-” he was shoved out of the way as the brute barreled down the hall towards the exit with the case under his arm. “We already told everyone about the situation, now lets go!” Nepharus shouted. Over the radio Ancient called “Boss…I’m seeing something happening outside…looks like a-” the table exploded outward and caved in through the middle. “My floors! I just had those waxed.” more rumbling caused the back of the room to collapse into a fiery abyss “Ancient! get my personal Baranus ready we’re blowing this joint! Ancient! Ancient answer me! hello?” only static could be heard from the other side, with a sigh The Shadowed one sighed then stared at a nearby wall. His laser vision cut a hole in the wall big enough for everyone to escape out of. Once everyone had made it to a safe distance they watched as the Crystal Palace exploded in a inferno, the crystal architecture melting into a formless mass and the wall crumbling into slush. The Shadowed One was contacted by Ancient “Your personal carrier is on it’s way…what happened down there?” the dark leader growled and stared into the blazing ruins “Someone tried to take me out…whoever it is has made a dangerous enemy tonight.” while the Shadowed One waited Sylus and Nepharus sat in the snow gazing at the stars “Woo…wild night huh? say I never got your name back there the name’s Sylus, toa of justice.” the makuta laughed a little “My name is Makuta Nepharus, good to meet you Sylus, I come from a small village afar from here, I came because there was something I was looking for, unfortunately it seems that it’s either been destroyed or lost somewhere.” the two sat in the snow for a moment longer before Sylus asked “Hey, where are you really from? like outside the Cryptex?” Nepharus sighed and made a small crystal sculpture with his Bell “I…don’t feel comfortable talking about that if you don’t mind.” Sylus shrugged and sat back in the snow next to Gadget’s inactive body face down in the snow “Nah it’s ok, everyone has there secrets.” Turaga Velnes suddenly appeared behind them “Indeed…and like all secrets…” he tossed a pair of bags between them “They must be revealed in due time…You saved my life tonight and for that I’m grateful, here these are from my personal collection, use them well.” Afterwards he stepped into a flying white and blue craft and ascended into the night sky. The Shadowed One called him on his B.L.A.M.’s radio “Sylus! we are leaving, take Gadget back for repairs, Ancient will be here soon.” Taking one last look at Nepharus he got up and followed after the Dark Hunter aircraft overhead. The Makuta got up and began the long walk home bag in hand and starlight to guide him.
Tyrant was furious when heard that the Shadowed One escaped unharmed, the vehicles he had sent two Maxolis robots to destroy had ended up destroying the robots as well, likely being rigged by Gadget, the explosion had caused a glacial quake that caused the explosives to detonate prematurely, and since many workers had been injured or perished, a lot of resignation papers would have to be reviewed. Finally the unintended destruction of the Crystal Palace meant that his alliance with the Skrall was over. meaning that they would likely attack Sundar as retribution. His plan to get revenge had failed…he watched the group of survivors depart then noticed from the corner of his eye another larger figure trudging in the other direction holding something in a glass case. “Perhaps this plan isn’t a complete loss…my revenge will come soon. just you wait…”

Sand sand everywhere, yet…
I know not where I be cast
Oh how could I forget?
Freedom! freedom at last!
land land as far as I can see
But I must wait a little longer
I think and think…Where is He?
among these wastes, I wonder?
I…hunger? I have a need for more…
These travelers bodies will do
Salve my cravings, down to my core…
For I will not stop till he is through…
Muscle and limb and armor, thoroughly I chew
these opportunities I have are so so very few…
Divine made mortal…what a epiphany, what a strand
For I am god no longer…I am Karzahni, the Hand
I will not bleed until this land does first
With it’s life blood I must quench my thirst…
Its ichor will make me whole again…a worthy to be Chronicle
Yes! this will be my goal…I must find The Prodigal…
so parched…so hungry…I will never starve…
My claim of this world I will go and carve…
Someone is near…
My next meal is here…

The lone agori ran with all the strength he could muster, the town had to know before it was too late. He was about to enter when a voice from behind called out to him from around a corner, frightened he pulled out a dagger and inched towards the corner. Instead, Bisola rounded the corner and held her hands up, the agori quickly tossed the knife aside “Vetrus! where have you been? you were gone all day, and where’s Khisuli? she went with you when you took your walk.” Vestrus told her about how he had been on a walk like any other day when a horrible monster from the myths had emerged from the ground, Khisuli had not been so lucky, she was torn apart and…eaten…afterwards he refused to say more, Bisola stood there uncertain of what to believe until he showed her what was left, a half eaten badly damaged mask, that confirmed her fears. “Khisuli…she was a kind brave soul, Bone hunters and Skrall aren’t depraved enough to do…this, I just don’t understand what kind of monster would do that to someone…take me to where you saw the monster.” An hours walk later they came across the body, mangled and missing parts, she could hardly look at the gruesome sight without gagging “Tell the others that there’s a killer out here.”
in a nearby crag Karzahni lurked hungrily watching the two matoran, how he had relished in feasting on the unfortunate soul in grasp, how he had torn the organic sinew from the joints and eaten them. It was strange and new to him yet also…euphoric, him becoming a cannibal? why had he done that? In that demented shattered mind he recalled being effortlessly tossed aside by the one called Anvokhan, how he had tormented and toyed with that being’s mind with enough mental trauma to drive a planet’s worth of people to gibbering madness and yet even after he used his full strength, all the Voice had to do was use two kanohi masks to defeat him and leave him for dead in his own world. His last efforts to stop Sylus from escaping had cost him his arm and his hard work as it was eaten by the massive eye in the sky. Without his realm he was vulnerable, mortal, and now he felt weak, tired and sick…he regurgitated the remnants of his victim’s remains and collapsed to his knees, his eyes felt dry somehow, his new teeth ached and the image of the rotting filth stirred a primal urge. Quickly he shoveled the vomited remains back in his mouth ignoring the disgusting taste and looked outside, the two matoran had left leaving him and the body. Reaching out he dragged the corpse into his makeshift hiding spot and began to pull it apart. The loud cracks and tearing of metal were the only sounds that could be heard that night. Yes, he would eat the inferior organic parts to live and fashion the rest into armor made from the metal of the bodies, he exhumed at the thought of cracking The Prodigal open like a shell and drinking it’s ichor, that is how he would regain his divinity, how he would find the ones who ruined him and consume their power too…a comforting thought how he would take his time pulling the limbs off of Anvokhan…slowly…piece by piece…over and over and over again, drinking his essence and listening to his anguished screams…he drifted off to sleep dreaming of conquest.

I can feel the heartlights beating…beating
the limbs…the limbs I cracked them till they were bleeding
They cried, screamed, and wavered
I offered them no quarter…
While I bit, sucked, and savored,
this land will have some order…
If they resist, they must pay…
for through me…this is the only way…
Salvation through consumption
a way free from corruption
I cannot wait! I cannot wait!
until I decide his fate…

Chapter 9 [Price of Salvation]
The Marendar briefly performed a area scan…looking in the direction of five fleeing figures.
Elemental energy detected; scanning...five energy signatures detected; identifying/.../ toa detected, engaging
Five toa ran through the mountain pass, two injured and four without weapons, they took shelter in a nearby cave while they tended to the wounded “I think we lost it…what was that thing? is it true the great beings made it to destroy us…why?!” his fellow toa looked down, he had been doing a patrol with five others to investigate the rumors of The Crystal Palace’s destruction, their search had not only found the rumor true but also something else, a weapon created to hunt them down it’s red eye gleaming in the dark, they had used everything they had before the toa of water they had with them was blown to pieces by a rocket and the leg of their toa of plasma was sliced of by a glowing blue blade “Yes…the Marendar was created to destroy our kind sit down and let me tell you a story…”
“Long ago in the land we call the Cryptex, the toa here protected the peace and kept the houses in check, all was plentiful and our future bright…until the Marendar came, it means ‘Salvation’ in Agori. This living weapon relentlessly hunted us down, killing us off by the dozens. We fought back, but nothing could harm it no elemental powers could stand against it, no weapons could harm it, no toa team could beat it…until we came up with a solution…using the only mask of dimensional gates we had, we cast it into another world without toa in the hopes that it would stay there…and how we were wrong. It came back somehow even stronger, armed with weapons that shouldn’t exist yet, it had returned with a heart of vengeance, if it even had one…So few of us remain, driven into hiding while it continues to look for us ,our Unity shattered. Tahu says He’ll find a way to destroy it, Lesovikk has fled to a far away place, and the rest of us are trying our best to survive between the Skrall attacks and Dark Hunters all over, our Duty abandoned in favor of survival. I don’t know if anyone made it out of the sanctuary alive the last time that thing found us. but if one thing is certain…we are fighting a losing battle in a world we no longer belong in...our Destiny by annihilation, inevitable”
“That’s pretty deep…then how did you know about all that?” his companion asked “I read something long ago about the great beings, you see I was a historian for the Order.” “You mean the Order of Mata Nui? I thought they didn’t take in toa, you know the code and all?” “When you live in a world without law, those kinds of rules only hold you back. Anyways I think we should-” a red laser dot positioned itself directly on the toa’s forehead before a deafening bang shattered his mask and knocked him over. The silhouette of The Marendar cast a shadow with the moon to it’s back
Target eliminated; remaining targets/.../four; two incapacitated, two unarmed; elemental energies/.../plasma, air, ice, iron, detected; adapting resistances, crystal repeater set to; fully automatic
The remaining toa stood between it and their injured, they would not go down without a fight. But through some miracle or some kind of divine intervention The toa killer suddenly disappeared as quickly as it appeared. “Where did it go? did it teleport? everyone on guard! it could be anywhere…”
The Marendar came back online in a strange but peaceful meadow of sorts, it had no recollection of what had occurred or this location it stood in, it’s data banks brought up only blanks. A giant stone column sat in the center of the field, above it was a strange sight, a giant metal sea shell leaking a metallic substance, a sculpture of a massive creature climbing up the tower and a spear-like weapon lodged in the center of the structure holding it in balance. “Strange isn’t it? the signs of a future yet to pass...and yet it is only one of many.” The Marendar whipped around weapon pointed at a bizarre being with eight arms, it didn’t seem fazed by the weapon pointed at it’s faceless helmet “You follow a plan destined for failure to set off a series of events that will inadvertently doom this world and the others around it, but it can be avoided… I can grant you the means to understanding it so that the future presented may be prevented.”
"Scanning/.../unknown entity, no elemental energy detected; unknown energy signature detected, calculating weapons efficiency against selected target/.../0.00003% combat not optimal"
The toa killer lowered it’s weapons as the entity rose into the air “I require a champion to act on my behalf, come…I bestow to you clarity, take this...” The being revealed a data chip on a pedestal behind the Toa killer, as it scanned the item the Entity placed all eight of it’s hands together to form a crown-like shape, before long the Marendar placed the chip in a slot in it’s neck. Soon the Marendar’s systems were overloaded with data to the point of almost complete meltdown, then a understanding of sorts washed over it something it didn’t comprehend. It looked up at The Prodigal of Salvation as it held out a hand to the toa killer. “All you must do is wish for a future so that I may-” Suddenly the Marendar awoke half buried in the snow, the toa it had been hunting were long gone.
"Assessing combat footage/.../identifying entities; six toa, two neutralized, two injured, two active, remaining targets escaped; one unknown entity, threat level; unknown; assessing database on 'Prodigal of Salvation'/.../ERROR no data found rerouting destination to Hallow-heart Village"
Back in the realm, the Prodigal floated in place alone, in it’s open hand a kopesh amulet with a rusted chain…it’s owner was here and it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths again.
Chapter 10 {The Hero’s Origin pt.2}

on a boat somewhere… 20 years before Teridax’s betrayal
“How does it feel to be the winner of the big contest?” The Makuta asked Sylus who was barely keeping in his excitement “I can’t even begin to imagine the things I’ll do once I reach paradise! it is a real honor to be selected by a Makuta of such high esteem!” The Makuta stood up a little straighter “Yes…paradise, and might I ask what your invention is per-say?” he held out a pair of glowing spheres “My defense orbs? they protect you…like a shield, a personal defense system…” The Brotherhood emissary listened carefully as Sylus went on about his creation, he was genuinely interested on how this creation could benefit the Brotherhood…how it could be used in the plan Teridax had in mind to overthrow the Great Spirit. Soon they landed on a island, the skies were clouded a dark yellowish grey, and the land was barren and dead, nothing grew for miles around. Sylus disembarked first taking in the surroundings “Kinda grim place for a vacation…hey I thought you said-” A paralysis disk struck him in the back of the head leaving him only able to watch the boat depart. The Makuta sneered “Did you really think I was going to help some backwater reject from nowhere end of the universe? Your usefulness to me ended the moment you stepped on that boat!” Sylus eyed the makuta as he kneeled down to eye level “These new ‘toys’ you’ve so easily parted with, I think they’ll be put to better use in my latest invention. don’t worry about your ‘friends’ they’ve probably been already dealt with, they were the one’s who set up to win the contest…Well enjoy your stay on Karzahni! I’m sure you’ll make new friends soon…” He cackled and flew off into the horizon.
When the disk’s effect wore off Sylus wandered towards the island’s center walking through a empty cold canyon. the sights of matoran sitting petrified on rocks and the screams that came from each step he took unnerved him, he wanted to go home, he wished he the Makuta was lying his friends wouldn’t try to get rid of him right? but on Stelt everyone was trying to off one another for a reason. The sight of a ominous looming castle overhead was enough to get him to turn around, the island’s namesake had other ideas, “Welcome! welcome! it’s been ages since we had someone new to our little family of misfits.” a grotesque depraved looking monster stepped out from the shadows, in his hand was a flaming chain and in the other was a twisted kanohi mask “I got a feeling you and I are going to be very well acquainted very soon…” Sylus had no time to run before a group of deformed feral matoran swarmed him…

Chapter 11 [Standoff with a Tyrant]
Velnes sat at his desk, papers detailing news about The Crystal Palace’s destruction. his hands clenched tight around the well worn spot of his desk where he usually vented his anger. The loss of the palace meant the fragile peace between the houses was waning and if something wasn’t done they would be at each other’s throats like wild kavinika wolves. the toa Sylus…perhaps he written him off too soon as a expendable, true his sources all over the wasteland said the toa was mostly responsible for the palace’s destruction but that did not mean he wasn’t still useful to him. In due time…he believed it was time to call on a old favor of his…
“Watcha doin Tour?” Izrahm shoved aside her partner to examine the weapon he was working on. Izrahm was a large female Skakdi clad in bright crimson red while the other sand blue Skakdi was named Touraz, a oddity among his kind due to his lack of a spine, calm demeanor and other traits that described his race in modern time, he was a walking enigma. “Izzy don’t you have anything better to do than interrupt me again? this is the fourth time in twenty seconds that you’ve asked.” the Proto-Skakdi sighed as he carefully press a wire into the custom sights of the flamethrower, Izrahm snorted and kicked a stack of boxes over out of boredom and fell on them, shattering the contents inside probably “Aw c’mon, I wanna bash some skulls together!” Touraz looked up from his table a serious expression on his face “Izrahm…those agents requesting this weapon from yesterday came from Sundar, you know? the same people you maimed?!” the bigger Skakdi rolled her eyes “Ah they had it comin, sides you really think handin over a fancy gun’s gonna stop them from takin everything we have?” Touraz stopped, he stared at the weapon on his bench, the wicked spikes and exhaust vents, the acrid smell of fuel stinging his eyes, and the threatening letter next to his table bearing the symbol of Sundar metal works co and within, a image of two figures One with a unusual mask and another with large wing like protrusions that read WANTED! UNIDENTIFIED TOA AND MAKUTA WANTED FOR ARSON DEAD OR ALIVE. Considering what would happen if they didn’t comply, they had little to no choice…placing his welding goggles back on he got back to work.
Sylus adjusted his Felwiin on his face, it felt good having it back but he could check the mask for damage later, Ancient said he wanted to show him something “So Boss…where we going?” Sylus asked, causally inspecting his new arm and the various tools in each finger. Ancient pressed a key into a doorway and it opened “Hanger bay, A contact from those Hydrolion folk asked for you specifically, you know those blue and white guys outside the Casino last night?” Sylus remembered speaking with the CEO of the company Turaga Velnes at the Casino yesterday night. “Yeah? what about them?” Ancient handed him a knife, the same one that had disabled his mask when he first arrived, the ‘toa’ looked over the blade “This is a Nullifying blade, I’m sure your very well familiar with how this thing actually works from first experience, they disable Kanohi masks and suppress powers but only once, afterwards you’ll need a new one, use it when you need it, I don’t trust those Hydrolion suits, always want something in return.” the veteran Dark Hunter pointed at a scattering of white domes in the distance to the west “If you make it there don’t stay too long.”
Nepharus sat in the reception room fidgeting in his seat, all around him in this bright white futuristic room were seats with lights underneath, in the corner a camera watched him focus his energies, it helped him calm his mind. In his hand was the business card he had received yesterday night it was inside the bag among the other things he had been given when the Palace exploded, earlier this morning a messenger from Hydrolion came to the village asking for him and seeing as Bisola told him that they don’t like being kept waiting so here he was. A ding from the door caught his attention as several workers left and a secretary exited the room after them. “Makuta…your appointment is ready.” Nepharus got up from his seat and entered through the doorway, ignoring the Secretary’s scowling expression as he tracked dirt on the clean white floors. Inside was a stark contrast to everywhere else, the office was much smaller than he expected. It a polished wooden floor, massive blue tinted windows displaying the outside and at the far end of the quaint office space Sat Turaga Velnes in the middle of a conversation with another, someone Nepharus recognized. “Well well well, fancy seeing you again my vibrantly colored friend, take a seat.” The makuta sat down in the chair next to Sylus who silently nodded at him, Velnes rapped is fingers on the desk. “Last night…the Crystal Palace, a icon for peace and neutrality was destroyed…” A screen displayed a live feed of the Palace exploding and crumbling to the ground. “Many in the wastes believe you two responsible, but we have secret evidence that a third party was involved…Sundar Metal works Co. and it’s CEO…Tyrant.” A screen displayed Tyrant watching the scene from the night before and a extended feed of him making a deal with a colossal brute, trading a display case with a mask inside. “That was Voporak, a former servant of the Dark Hunters who ended up being a bouncer for the Palace before it’s destruction, the mask is the Fabled Mask of Time a priceless artifact from outside.” Nepharus leaned in, interested in the mask. “With all due respect turaga, why would Sundar and this ‘Tyrant want to blow up the Palace?” Nepharus asked. Velnes closed the screens “Vengeance? petty pride? who knows at this point, that Ex Dark Hunter has been clawing at the hunter’s throats for centuries trying to get back at them no doubt for long time ago, But to direct his self founded company to destroy a neutral space is unprecedented and must have something to do with-I’m sorry but if you could take your feet off of my desk before I call security…” Sylus quickly took his feet off the table knocking things over, Velnes sighed”…Now that being said, you two have a bounty on your heads yes? If you where to ‘negotiate’ with the Owner of Sundar and ‘convince’ him to leave the Cryptex then I might release the footage to everyone and clear your names…otherwise…” He snapped his fingers and two giant Skopio mechs appeared outside the windows, weapons aimed at the two “…Otherwise I’ll have to demonstrate what we do to criminals around here, and we don’t have the mercy of a prison cell if your asking.” The two watched the massive rotary guns rev up, their targeting systems aimed for the head, Sylus spoke up after a uncomfortable moment of silence “We’ll take the job! on one condition…” The turaga snapped is fingers again and the mechs withdrew. “Trying to bargain with me are you? tch typical Dark Hunters…very well, I will humor you, what is your condition?” sylus stood up from his seat “The mask…we want to keep it as payment after Sundar is dealt with.” Velnes thought about it for a moment before giving is answer “Fine, you can keep the mask and whatever you find inside. Nepharus decided to ask a question “But isn’t Sundar one of the Six houses? you would turn on them easily?” the Turaga turned around “So was The Palace, so was Terrashire…as far as the council is concerned, Sundar lost it’s place long ago, and now that they’ve declared war on everyone…we now have a reason to wipe that eyesore of a foundry off the face Cryptex…ah speaking of which take this.” He pressed a button under his desk and a bucket of blue paint appeared from a floor tile next to the two “Mark the top of the Foundry with this paint before you leave, it’s important…trust me.” As they turned and left the office the Turaga of Hydrolion called back to Nepharus “We could always use more employees, my offer still stands…”
The looming metal gates of the Foundry unsettled Touraz, many had entered before him among large crowd gathered outside, but few left with what they came in with, be it a bagful of tools to full on vehicles, those that did leave with their items seemed to look down on the unfortunates with brand new products that still glowed from the forge heat. The interior of the massive building was blisteringly hot yet it felt cold and empty, no natural light could be found, few workers could be seen operating machinery, and the sense that he didn’t belong here. He and his partner Izrahm used to work here and create tools and items for everyone, but those were the good old days…ever since that Tyrant took over he turned the calm workplace into a dictatorship, banishing or harshly disciplining those that failed to meet his standards, for a while the two believed that everything would be fine…until the day someone was killed was the day that the pair of Skakdi decided to leave and start their own business, yet even after all that Sundar would continue to harass them, trying to buy them back into the business or through blackmail and extortion. Izrahm had assaulted the last pair of representatives that visited them leading to now, as Touraz walked through the once familiar halls he remembered his time back on Zakaz…
Long ago in a forgotten age his people had been a temperamental yet mostly tame race that lived in a peaceful society, he decided to take to the seas beyond and meet new peoples and cultures, when he returned home however the home he had once known was destroyed by monsters that looked like those he had once known, vicious snarling and extremely violent creatures, even his kind and caring partner Izrahm, whom he left behind during his travels was replaced with a cutthroat that would kill anyone who looked at her the wrong way, she had almost killed him on their first meeting, had he not jogged her memory of him. the months following could only be described as purgatory, he did not fit in, his smaller stature, lack of a visible spine and smaller teeth made him weaker than all the other Skakdi, and they loved to pick on him when Izrahm wasn’t around. However she was no different despite caring about him, her constant fights and how they inevitable dragged him into them meant no end to the injuries he had to attend to for both of them, the Izrahm he remembered back then would never pick a fight intentionally. Touraz finally decided enough was enough and with Izrahm in tow left Zakaz in hopes that the other parts of the universe were more accommodating.
But today he was a simple scrap merchant down on his luck in some Mata Nui-forsaken limbo about to enter a den of snakes. the main entrance to the CEO’s office was a thin metal slab with multiple dents all over and a hole to peer through. The Pre-Skakdi took a deep breath and opened the hatch with a loud creaking sound, the inside of the office was covered in overthrown furniture and scorch marks on the walls, a painting of the Shadowed One had knives punctured into it like a dart board, scratching noises and frustrated yelling could be heard in a door on the far corner along with the sounds of things breaking. Suddenly the doors swung open and Tyrant stormed out dragging the broken leg of a table and cursing profanities under his breath, slowly he sat down at the large worn slab that passed for a desk and locked eyes with Touraz “What do you want? can’t you see I’m having a bad day?!” he spat, making the blue Skakdi flinch. After composing himself he raked his claws on the desk waiting for a answer eyeing him like a hungry animal, Touraz cautiously reached into his bag and brought out the weapon, a flamethrower weapon with pieces of unknown tech strapped around it and placed it in front of Tyrant. the CEO of Sundar looked unimpressed with the weapon before him “This is it? this is what you promised me?” Touraz shifted to the side nervously, any other Skakdi would have boasted about it’s craftsmanship but two thing certainly stood out; Skakdi were not known to build things and he would be already dead if he was ‘normal’. “Yes, this…” he struggled to find the right words “…this is what I have to offer, if I could ask…what exactly do you need a weapon like this for?” Tyrant picked up the flamethrower, pointed it at the portrait on the wall and pulled the trigger. A stream of fireballs blasted out the front barrel scattering as they traveled through the air and suddenly converged on a single spot of the painting’s ‘head’ the explosions engulfed the frame turning it to ash a second later. Tyrant grinned and turned to the Skakdi to answer “Revenge…sweet sweet revenge, that’s all you need to know...now get out of my office.” Touraz didn’t wait around to be escorted out by security Maxolis and hurried out of the building and back home as fast as possible.
Sylus and Nepharus peered over a rock at the security down below, two heavily armed Maxolis Robots armed with twin Cordak Blasters watched the crowd of people gathered around the entrance, one or two would enter occasionally and they would leave later for better or worst, getting in wasn’t going to be easy “Hey I have a idea, why don’t you possess one of those robots and smash our way through?” Sylus asked, “I’m not comfortable leaving my body to attempt whatever insane plan you have just so we both get killed, and I don’t trust you with my unattended body anyways.” Sylus huffed and brought up another idea “Well can’t you use your Makuta powers to enrage the crowd down there so we can slip inside?” Again the Makuta dismissed it, saying that he wasn’t sacrificing innocent lives, to that he didn’t have the same abilities as a Makuta from here, where he came from the Makuta were protectors and wielders of light. Sylus remembered the Makuta of Okoto from his previous adventure and how he would have done whatever it took in a situation like this. Rather, Nepharus offered to use his time abilities to speed up time around them and warp inside the foundry unnoticed. The inside was sweltering, they passed rows upon rows of empty office stalls and scrap dumps, smoke filled the air making breathing difficult. Fire and smoke suddenly blocked the way forward, Nepharus deactivated his powers and pointed upward. Tyrant stood on a catwalk aiming a flaming rifle at the two intruders. “Are you lost? we don’t tolerate trespassing in restricted areas of the factory, but well I guess I could let you stay for some…target practice, hold still…I promise it will only hurt for a few hours!” Nepharus and Sylus ran the other way as flames rained downwards from above setting everything around them on fire. “Do you remember the way out?” Sylus called out, Nepharus shook his head “Too much smoke! I can’t see! we’ll have to find a way to the catwalks above!” the ‘toa’ reached for his mask of Exfiltration but remembered it was gone, it had been stolen on his arrival. The flames were closing fast and the exits were blocked off, Tyrant grinned he may not be able to finish them off personally but watching them burn alive from the safety of the catwalk above would be a great deal more pleasurable.
Touraz finally made it home…or at least where it used to be. In the place of the little shop was a crater and smoldering ruins along with a ruined Maxolis robot in the center, Izrahm was nowhere to be seen except for a set of robot footprints leading towards the factory he just left. “They took everything…I gave them what they wanted and they took everything anyways!” he wanted to scream at the top of his lungs he wanted to kicked over the nearby post he wanted…he wanted to go back and make them pay not for destroying his life but for making everyone’s lives miserable and whatever it took he will get his partner and only friend back, grabbing his crossbow and backpack he rushed back towards the Sundar foundry.
“Getting kinda hot in ere’ aint it?” Izrahm wondered to herself as she ripped her shield from the neck of a Maxolis guard, peeking around a corner she saw a inferno blazing and amongst the flames two figures back to back. “Ay? that’s those guys in tha bounty! ho ho! no way I’m gonna let this opportunity pass!” she thought to herself while charging through the flames and debris. Sylus dodged just in time for a red blur to crash into Nepharus and pin him to the ground, he saw this as a chance to run and left the makuta at the mercy of the newcomer. A nasty looking Skakdi towering above the Makuta with a slab of metal aimed at his neck. “Your head is going to fetch me a fine price for . Tyrant was enraged, “What do you think your doing with my prey?!” Izrahm looked up at Tyrant with a uncaring expression and went back to her execution. “DON’T IGNORE ME YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SCUM!! GET. OUT. OF. MY. WAY!” Tyrant leapt from the balcony and shoved her aside. “I have the right to kill im’! I got im’ first! I dare you to try an take this from me lizard man!” Izrahm barked as she slammed him back, Tyrant retaliated with a blast of fire from his weapon, it splashed against the shield catching her attention “You? challenging me? a spiky slug like you would melt under my flames before you could land a hit on me!” Nepharus scrambled away before the inevitable fight broke out between the two and he quickly found Sylus fiddling with a door lock using his lockpick device. “What’s with the look?” Nepharus wanted to berate Sylus for leaving him to die but quickly reminded himself that his partner was a Dark Hunter, willing to do anything for money, including abandonment, the Makuta recomposed himself “You could’ve at least helped me you know.” he muttered Sylus finished picking the lock on the door and marched up the stairs to the main office “I found a map earlier saying that the outer balcony is just beyond the main office if we can-” a metal bolt zipped past his head and embedded itself in the wall, in the distance a silhouette of a lone shooter reloaded his weapon and hopped off his perch to relocate. The pair took cover behind a overturned table “We have a sniper shooting at us now? ugh give me a break, why can’t it ever be easy? alright you have any ideas?” The sniper began taking shots at them again “I was hoping you would.” Sylus remembered the optical mask he was given a few days ago. “Well I got this…” he said bringing the mask out, Nepharus brought out a small engraved black and blue stone and whispered something into it before putting it away again. “What was that?” the toa asked, the Makuta looked him in the eyes with a serious expression ““A word of warning when help arrives…you may want to hide.”
Touraz primed another bolt in his crossbow as he settled on top of a shipping crate, he was going to get answers and if he had to pin those two to the wall to do it so be it…although the proto-Skakdi had no intention of killing anyone, but the way his targets kept moving in the way of his shots made it extremely difficult to not hit them, maybe a few more warning shots should keep them in cover until he could get close enough. Behind him another explosion rocked the factory grounds as a black and glowing blue figure lumbered into view, a trail of lacerated Maxolis security robots behind it. At the same time a shout was heard and he was tackled by a toa wearing a multi optical mask “You have ten seconds to drop the weapon before I show you what mine can do.” Sylus said raising his blade which began to glow a bright fiery red, Touraz said nothing, instead he pulled out a flashbang from one of his pouches and flipped his visor over his eyes, the blast gave him enough time to leap off of the crates and scurry past the glowing figure who paid him no attention, instead it’s featureless gaze fixed on the stunned toa with the glowing sword.
Elemental energies detected in local vicinity/.../target found/.../status; armed ;overriding primary protocols, loading secondary objective/.../weapons primed at 90% set to kill; engaging toa threat.
a barrage of crystal bullets pierces through Sylus’s armor tearing his prosthetic shoulder to metallic shreds causing him to drop his sword off the of the side of the metal crates and drop to a knee (“I’m lucky that wasn’t my good arm…that armor was made out of protosteel and it was ripped apart like it was made of paper!”) he spotted the bright blue glow of the attacker through the smoke and ducked back into place as a blur of blue energy sliced the cover he had in two. “No! stop what are you doing? I command you to cease fire!” Nepharus leapt in between the Marendar and Sylus with arms at both sides. “We need you to help all the workers evacuate this place before it burns down, I understand you were made to destroy toa but can you please…please put aside your programming for one moment to help these innocent people?” The construct stood unmoving it’s weapons focused all on the wounded toa but it’s ‘face’ looked directly at Nepharus, the programming within told it to destroy the toa as per directive, but since it’s encounter with the strange entity in the pocket space it ‘felt’ things which would be impossible normally for a machine like it, it could not process these ‘emotions’ or free thought but when it ‘chose’ to act on these outliers…the toa destroyer lowered it’s cannon and disarmed it’s weapon systems before turning around and searching for survivors. Sylus sat there astonished at what he had witnessed before he could answer though, another boom rocked the building and a vat filled with slag tipped over blocking the exit outside. He was immediately blinked out of harm’s way by Nepharus’s time abilities to the safety of the catwalks above, molten slag began to melt away at the building’s poorly maintained supports melted away. A bright flash and a boom landed the finishing blow to the surroundings causing a sinkhole to open up in the floor. once they passed through the office and onto the balcony they marked the front with the blue paint and leaped off towards the ground below.
Izrahm rubbed her faceplate and the sizable dent that had been implanted by Tyrant’s fist, her legs felt like they would give out at a moment’s notice. The pyromaniac was refueling his weapon while surrounding himself with flames to protect himself “You know, back when I was a Dark Hunter we took trophies off of our kills be it a finger, a mask normally for toa or even whole limbs for everything else. But for the ones like yourself Skakdi? we tore the spines right out of them and hung them on the walls like banners, and yours is looking like a mighty fine one right now, no wonder the tradition was banned later on, unfortunately for you I don’t follow their laws.” He lowered his fire wall and aimed the flamethrower at her head. “When I finish you, that pacifist freak, and that miserable excuse for a toa, I’m gonna track down that spineless coward you call a partner and I’m gonna-” He never got to finish his monologue when a metal bolt whistled through the air, barely audible to most except her…she recognized that sound anywhere. (“Tor? but how?”) The projectile, no bigger than a finger ricocheted off her shield, on some metal pipes off of the metal walls and right into the fuel tank of Tyrant’s weapon. Any screams that the ex Dark Hunter made were drowned out by the deafening boom as the Meteor rifle detonated, showering the area in flaming fuel, Izrahm covered herself with the makeshift cover and looked in the distance, she made out a faint lens flare of a scope before it vanished, soon footsteps could be heard approaching until Touraz ran over and knelt down by her side. “What were you thinking? taking him on by yourself?! you could’ve been killed!” Izrahm snorted and punched his arm, maybe a little too hard, the Proto-Skakdi winced and held his shoulder “You worry too much! I’ll be fine jus a little dinged up is a hrrgg! well…maybe a little worst for wear but well...” Touraz hefted her up and walked with her out towards the hole in the wall “My shinin hero…heh you gonna take me up in your arms and take me on a date to show me tha world?” she said in a singsong voice, Touraz looked away embarrassed, Izrahm laughed the whole way out.
Nepharus and Sylus watched the Sundar Metalworks Co. collapse inward the sounds of metal bending and cracking could be heard over the sounds of the people waiting outside retreating from the ruined complex. the sun was beginning to set over the horizon and soon a chill took to the air without another word the two went separate ways, Hydrolion made good on their word and removed the bounty on the both of them and the company rewrote the tale blaming Sundar Metalworks for the Crystal Palace’s destruction, no one grieved the loss of the foundry nor were the workers inside at a loss of a job, Hydrolion was more than willing to take them in. One individual however…
“CURSE YOU!!!” Tyrant screamed into the night sky among the ruins of his factory and swung around what was left of the Meteor rifle, it had melted itself to his hand in the combustion leaving him without a free hand, it only made him more livid “CURSE YOU AND THAT PATHETIC VILLAGE! ONCE I FIND WHERE YOU LIVE I’LL BURN IT OFF THE FACE OF THE WORLD! NO ONE WILL REMEMBER WHERE IT WAS WHEN I’LL FIND YOU!” Tyrant kicked a plate of steel across the scrap yard continuing to curse profanities to every name he knew. His rant suddenly stopped when a rasping voice suddenly caused him to freeze up in some kind of fear, he tried to move but his body remained stiff…then he remembered a few days ago. A monstrous beast claiming to be the forgotten brother of Artakha swept into his factory and began killing his workers and consuming their bodies. He put a stop to it by using his powers to open the floor up and sealing it within the stone underneath and now that the floor had given way during the battle the thing trapped within was free. He had heard it wail for food beneath the foundry floors for days, it’s voice barely coherent but just enough to be understood, he knew he had to run or fight it and he wasn’t going to flee again, but before he could turn around to face it, the former mad god now horrific abomination, Karzahni was already behind him, he whispered a haunting tune through his mask’s grotesque mouth and through the orifices on his body all speaking in unison…the last thing he would ever hear before those jaws clamped around his neck.

Cooked to a crisp? that sounds so good
juicy and ripe, I know that it should
Oh the thought, it makes me water
though tonight I crave something…hotter
you thought you could hide? you thought you could sleep?
locking me in the walls of your keep?
believing you could keep me from my feast?
I know in the end you’ll be deceased
Oh little Tyrant you think your clever
resisting me
only
makes
ME

The next morning, several rumors spread around the Cryptex that Tyrant was dead, The ex Dark Hunter’s body was found dragged several miles away from the ruins, the limbs torn off from a mangled corpse and his face missing, along with several footprints leading into the desert…
Chapter 12 The Great Southern Wrymkill
“Ere’s the deal, you send one’a your guys to help with our expedition and we’ll give ya whatever we find down there, deal?” Boridus said, he was leaning against a pillar in The Shadowed One’s throne room eyeing the leader with a overconfident grin. The Shadowed One’s expression did not change in the slightest, he sighed and flicked a bit of dirt off his armrest “Why are you in here? I do not recall inviting you in my chambers.” Boridus raised his hands and gestured to rwo of his associates to carry in a large box. “Now wha we ave ere is somethin that’s gonna change yer mind roight quick!” Again, The Shadowed One sighed, he had a lot to be disappointed in, especially nowadays since the destruction of The Crystal Palace and now Sundar Metal works Co. was a pile of scrap being picked away at by scavengers. the toa of stone continued his advertisment “…and beore you ask , yeah I heard all about Sundar goin outta business, roight shame there, we were business partners after all. But life moves on ya know? ah I’m getting off track lemme show ya…’tha big dig’ eh? eh?..no? you blokes and your sense a humor…”
Ancient stood in the back observing Sylus’s rifle training, they had worked their way up from blades to traditional launchers in the course of several days of nonstop training, the weapon he had given the toa was a traditional Skirmisher rifle, these weapons were by no means uncommon, they were mass produced somewhere and it showed, you couldn’t go anywhere in the Cryptex’s wastes without seeing at least one in the hands of some raider or a few caravan hands. They rarely jammed, were very accurate, could turn simple scrap into usable ammo and could still function even when badly damaged. once upon a time he had been cornered by some warmongering Skakdi thugs and had nothing but a scavenged and badly damaged rifle at hand, he ended up killing all of them before the gun eventually fell apart. Sylus however was struggling to control to the weapon’s recoil. “Keep a tight grip on your weapon! if you damage the walls of this room with that rifle it’s coming out of your next pay!” “I can’t help it! these weapons are so strange! why do they shoot tiny projectiles? I can’t see where I’m shooting!” the wall behind the test dummy was peppered with bullet holes. A new figure walked into the firing range “Well well well if it ain’t the ‘wanted terrorist’ everyone’s been talkin bout, you that Sylus fellow?” Sylus tossed the rifle aside and nodded “Got your name cleared? by those Hydrolion blokes? I would’ve payed you more I you’d came to me instead and I might’ve even given you two some extra firepower to boot!” the figure raised his hand for a fistbump, a common greeting among toa, Sylus returned it to which the newcomer let out a hearty laugh “Any friend of Nepharus is a friend of mine! the name’s Boridus, Toa Boridus an I’ve got a job for you both.” he gestured the both of them in for a friendly group huddle “We have a…issue with one of our big digs comin up, we’re outta fuel! she won’t move an inch we need to find some gas so we can start diggin for some…and between you an me new guy, I’m gonna need you to see if you can…you know.” he made a gesture with his oversized fingers, but Sylus caught on “Steal? no ‘borrow some from Hydrolion? Boridus clapped him on the back with enough force to knock the wind out of him and chuckled “I knew I liked you! smart kid you got ere, why not work for us instead of bein a merc?” Ancient snapped his head towards the toa of stone and gave a silent glare, Sylus shook his head “The Shadowed One won’t let me go.” Boridus stood up for a moment and shook his head “Really? ah well that’s alroight we got our obligations an stuff I understand…well let me show ya two what I’m talking about.”
“Ere she is! ain’t she a beaut?” Boridus posed proudly before a colossal supersized four legged Skopio mech, it was poorly painted over with brown and yellow markings over what was originally a blue and purple color scheme, a large drill had been welded to the front of the mech as well as multiple spikes afixed to it’s treads likely for traction. Ancient and Sylus eyed the empty spot in the midsection of the Skopio’s main body, the fuel tank that powered the vehicle was ruptured as several GEO workers were hard at work patching the hole. “Our last run we it a rough patch with a sand wyrm, nasty things that like to hide in tha ceilings, tha beast ruptured our fuel tank and forced us to return to the surface before we ran outta fuel, an well…that’s why we need your help…with the expidition, we’re just waitin for our boys to get new tanks and fix the rig up.” Boridus scrached the back of his head with his shovel claw pointing at the damage. “What’s a sand worm?” Sylus asked, “Oh mate you wanna know? you really wanna know? a sand wyrm is the stuff nightmares are made of they come to the surface at night under a new moon to hunt, an before you ask no it’s wyrm not worm this aint no limbless creepy crawly we’re talkin about they’re flyin lizards that fly…through the ground, thankfully they don’t come out for another twelve nights. Ancient grimaced to himself, he had seen too many lives taken because of those things, good hunters had lost their lives because they didn’t know about the sixteen foot long lizards that emerged from the ground. While Boridus continued to educate Sylus about sand wyrms, Ancient walked over to the Skopio for a closer look at the damage “Claw marks…teeth…dents…hmm what’s this?”
“One time I saw me best mate get attacked by a bunch of em got his vehicle ripped apart until there was nothin left, couldn’t even find the remains in the sands when we digged there.” Sylus nodded clearly interested until Ancient strolled over “Ok what’s the hidded catch? your not giving us the full picture.” “Catch? nah mate there aint no catch just a simple guard job.” “Oh? then tell me why there are Burn marks on the vehicle? If I recall correctly from your ramblings about those sand dragons they don’t breath fire, something else did that to your vehicle and it aint no wrym.” Boridus froze and looked around akwardly then leaning in when he saw no one around “Ok ya caught me cheatin a lil, truth is I want to find me a Kanohi Dragon, yeah strange place to find one all the way underground don’t worry it’s not a threat anymore, we wounded it before we took the hit, but the real treasure is one a it’s scales.” He straightened up puffing his chest out proudly “Yeah I ge one of those scales and I can sell it for a fortune and you two can get half of the share, problem is as I mentioned before those caves are full a bloody sand wryms and I need your help. What do ya say? help out a humble miner and entrepreneur?” Ancient and Sylus looked to one another “Well…do you have anything more material?” Sylus inquired rubbing his fingers together. The toa of stone stared dumbfounded before bursting into bellowing laughter that shook the ground “You must be lookin for somethin like a piece of equipment yep, got this interestin mask here. Spent a bloody fourtune just to get it only to find out it’s worthless, they said it can ‘make you go faster’ or some nonsense, all it’s done for me is make me trip ova everythin! kid since I like ya I’ll give it to ya in exchange for that Zulva you got there.” Sylus looked at the multi optical mask in his hand that Boridus was pointing at “I mean those things are worthless sure can’t turn em off and they caused many accidents to happen but I jus wan one so I for a personal project of mine.” reluctantly Sylus handed over the mask of Omni vision and in return he received the Kanohi Ahkma mask of hyper-velocity Just then the engine of the Skopio roared to life and lit up “Oi! that’s our que to roll out let’s get this rig movin c’mon!”
Deep underneath the sandy dunes of the Cryptex one would expect dirt, rocks and earth and they would be right to believe that. But go deeper and it would be a whole new world, stone gives way to metal and infrastructure, large angular caverns full of metal beams and open space for miles around, down below at the very bottom was a massive ocean that dripped upward into the ceiling this is the core of the Cryptex. The caravan of mining vehicles lumbered along one of the many crystal structures that connected at the ceiling to the bottom of the cave system. Boridus polished his shovel claws while admiring the view of the vast underground vista, it never got old seeing this otherworldly place and to his knowledge GEOscolia were the only ones who had access to it, they had been the first to find this place in the early days when the six houses were united, when Velnes and Boridus were friends…
{7 years ago}
“Good day to you Boridus, how goes the mining?” Velnes asked “Just stellar mate we just found a new cave system and I was gonna ask if we could borrow one a your Skopios?” overlooking the makeshift platform were dots of Purple, Blue, Brown and Yellow as the combined forces of Hydrolion and Geoscolia worked together on a custom built Skopio mech, the first of it’s kind ever since the blueprints for the machine were found. Boridus and Velnes watched the workers with deep admiration, the bond between the Turaga and Toa had never been stronger since the both of them ended up in the Cryptex together, they had come from the same village and had formed the two companies in order to make this world a better place…and so it would stay this way, until one fateful day…
The toa of stone’s thoughts were interrupted by the wail of a siren and the sounds of battle around him. “Boss! we’re under attack!!” Boridus snapped into action “Sand wyrms?” The agori looked fearfully at a flying vessel bearing the blue and purple mark of Hydrolion followed by dozens of flying winged snakes. “Those power thirstin stone rats followed us down here! Everyone to battle stations! we got ourselves some blokes lookin for trouble, let’s give em some!” The next few moments of that time was a three way battle between GEO, Hydrolion. and the local sand wyrms, both rival companies fireing upon each other and the wyrms while the beasts made casualties on either side. Sylus dodged and weaved out of harms way as the serpents snapped their bristle filled jaws at him his sword finding it’s mark more than once. Ancient flew around on his jet boots taking the fight to the wyrms through punches kicks, and volleys of Rhotuka blasts. A high powered water beam blasted one of the vehicles off of the crystal road and into the ocean far below. Boridus reached the front of the Skopio and hopped into the cockpit pulling a heavy crank inside. Immediately the thing transformed from a trended tank to a quadruped mech allowing the other vehicles to pass between it’s legs. Sylus hopped off of the mech and onto one of the Thornatus vehicles below while Ancient hovered close by. The Skopio’s main cannon shot down several of the sand wyrms while it’s lunged forward to trap another in it’s pincers killing it instantly. Boridus turned the head of the mech around to look at the mercenaries and spoke through it’s loudspeaker “You go on ahead, I’ll keep Hydrolion off a your hides.” a blast of water rocked the vehicle. “Jus remember to get me one a them scales!” With that Boridus turned his attention back to the ship and the appoaching sand wyrms with a war cry in his throat.
{5 years ago}
“Your…you want what mate?” Boridus questioned in confusion, Velnes tapped the bottom of his staff at the cave mouth leading to a entire cave structure. “The Ocean in this cave…it’s water…I want all of it! every last drop for our companies, think Boridus old friend! with this infinite water source we could become the most powerful forces in the Cryptex! The other four houses, the bandits, even the accursed Dark Hunters! we’ll crush them under our might and bring peace and order to this world.” Boridus looked at his friend like he had gone mad “Mate…Velnes, we…I…we can’t.” Velnes snarled “We can’t what? we. can’t. what?! your acting selfish! ever since you found that cavern you want it all to yourself don’t you? what will you do with all that water? it will go to waste if we don’t share it!” Velnes had that look in his eyes that the toa of stone didn’t like, his boss and CEO of Geoscolia, Toa Vaticus had told him to keep this cavern a secret from everyone, but he thought if he showed his best friend maybe he would keep the secret too? “I…can’t let you harvest this cave dry of it’s water…if that even is water down there. I can’t let you destroy this place out of greed…” The turaga glared intensely at his friend before storming off with his escort “…And here I thought we were friends Boridus…fine keep your cave, but this isn’t over…” Suddenly the brightness and wonder of the otherworldly massive cave seemed smaller to Boridus…
A large stone cast orb loomed ahead as their destination. This was where the Kanohi Dragon was sheltered inside and only the mining equipment could break through. The worker set up the mining laser while Sylus and Ancient kept guard outside watching for Sand wyrms leaving the two to talk while they waited “Do you believe in the toa code?” Ancient said suddenly, the question caught Sylus off guard so Ancient continued, You know? the unwritten laws that all toa follow like don’t kill anyone, or don’t steal, fight in the shadows and all that nonsense.” Sylus looked over at his mentor, this was the first time since he got here that Ancient had asked him a question unrelated to work. “Um…no? I never actually knew a code existed much less followed one…so no I don’t.” the dark hunter registered that answer for a moment before nodding satisfied with the answer. “Good, cause all those other toa out there? those rules got em killed.” The conversation was interrupted by the sounds of earth cracking and equipment shutting off. Ancient and Sylus picked up some of the miners rifles, Jolter tesla rifles, capable of melting solid stone into plasma with bolts of electricity. They checked it’s battery before joining the miners inside the newly formed hole.
The inside of the sphere was massive, molten lava flowed through the inside of the dome like veins and the heat inside was sweltering hot. In the center of the chamber was the petrified remains of the Kanohi Dragon, it had succumbed to it’s wounds and crated this dome of hardened magma in order to protect itself...although it had become it’s tomb instead. Only a single pristine mask shaped scale was all that was left of the once majestic creature. Sylus picked up the scale looking through the ‘eyes’ it dawned on him that he had seen such a creature before, back in a very different world, although that dragon had just been a illusion. “Remember to keep that thing hidden, don’t want it to break or else we’re not getting paid.” Ancient commented…
Boridus sat on the smoldering wreck of the Skopio watching the Hydrolion ship slowly plummet to towards the sea below until it disapeared with a distant splash. the two mercenaries returned just in time to see the toa of stone leap off of the vehicle. “You came back! you got it? you know the scale?” Sylus handed him the scale “Good job on gettin what I asked for, now the matter of your pay…” He reached into a still intact secret compartment on the Skopio and rumaged inside. “Hold up for a sec…jus gotta find it in ere…” he finally fished out a remote control. “Just gotta reach the surface now, c’mon I wanna show you somethin…
Ancient and Syus were led towards a rocky cliff overlooking the Hydrolion official building. “Alrioght now ere me out, while I was fightin that ship I happened to track where the escape pods tracked back to an got me tha coordinates to the main buildin!” his hand caressed the red button on the remote “All I gotta do is press this button an me boys will undermine tha whole place and New Odina, you won’t have to be mercenaries ever again!!” Ancient stepped around Boridus to look behind the overlook. Thousands of mining vehicles all facing a hole in the ground. Boridus, you can’t do that! we had a deal!” The toa of stone looked unphased “Whoops left out that tiny detail didn’t I? An why not? I figure it’s fair game after wha they did to us, side’s you can work for us without worrin about the backstabbin of the merc life once tha citadel’s underground. I’m doin ya two a favor an this is your payment, freedom!” Ancient shook his head. “That’s not what I mean! if you destroy that building you’ll start a civil war between not only them but us as well…and you do not want to go to war with the boss.” Boridus snarled and walked up to the Dark Hunter “You ain’t got to do anythin! what part of freedom don’t ya understand? everyone knows your bounty hunter group has been teeterin on the edge of internal collapse for centuries now, it don’t matter how strong your Shadowed One says they are they’re a dying breed of tha past, an if I gotta bury a few hunters under for gettin in the way of well deserved justice then so I will!” The pair ready their weapons for a fight. “We can’t allow you to do that Boridus.” the toa of stone called upon his power over stone as two giant fists of rock appeared beside him. “You wanna rock? then lets roll!”

Velnes stood at the precipice of a now ruined battery manufacturing plant, now crumbled inward by unstable ground, Boridus stood behind him with a unhappy expression. “What. have. you done?” Velnes whispered. Boridus watched as several Hydrolion ships few overhead towards the sinkhole. “You could ave ruined everything…” Boridus said sternly “…And I stopped you from makin a bad decision.” Velnes slams his staff to the ground. “That plant could have saved millions! and now billion more will suffer all because you couldn’t see beyond your sentimentality!” He screamed at him. Boridus tightened his grip pointing a accusing finger at him. “there was nothin sentimental about trying to prevent corporate greed from messin with somethin we barely understand! there was nothin sentimental when I lost my friend!” The two argued for an hour until it reached a boiling point, the two friends drifted apart as enemies…
Ancient struggled in the stone fist’s grip as Boridus blasted Sylus with a barrage of rocks. ”You can’t beat me ere! I’m in my element! jus give up an lay down your weapons!” Sylus scliced through a boulder and activated his Felwiin to absorb a blow. “I’ll give up when I’m dead!” he shouted and charged the toa of stone. Boridus blocked the blow with his shovel claw and knocked himself into the air with a column of stone. “You talk big but you still gotta lot to learn rookie!” Boridus dove into the ground burrowing through the earth and exiting out of the base of the cliff. a second later the precipice cracked right down the middle and collapsed. Boridus looked upon his handywork, “You shoulda jus taken my offer while you still could…” The rumbling of the destroyed cliffside brought with it a sudden and complete silence… Boridus remembered his detonator and reached into his side pouch. but found a rock instead. “What the? you cheeky lil’…” The silence was disturbed by a quiet humming that became louder and louder with each second. Boridus looked up just in time for Sylus to come down with his sword slicing down through his shoulder armor. the massive shoulder pad and shovel claw fell apart as the blade exited out of his armor. the toa of stone looked at his arm in disbelief as Ancient landed behind him and peppered his back with his Rhotuka spinners. Boridus suddenly felt all of his limbs lose control as he fell to the ground. “It’s over Boridus…” Ancient stood over the toa pressing his foot on his chest and aiming his launcher at his head. Instead the toa gave a weak chuckle. “Is it? well go on then…do me in…kill me! Velnes i’ll probably pay you more for bringin in my head.” Ancient stared down the toa, his finger on the trigger, then…he lowered his weapon and stepped off. Sylus watched as he took out the detonator and tossed it at the toa. “You think we’re all the same, don’t you? that we do jobs for money and money alone?” Boridus looked at the detonator then back at the hunter. “Think about the lives your about to endanger if you press that button. Is it worth it? can you still call yourself a toa if you go through with it?” As much as he hated to admit it, he was right. the lives that would’ve been wasted in his act of petty vengance was he any better than the turaga he once called a friend? Boridus smacked the detonator away and looked up at the afternoon sky. he closed his eyes and lay there, the spinner’s effects having worn off a while ago. “Yeah…your right, go take the scale. I never needed it. consider it as your payment.” Toa Boridus said turning his head over to look at Sylus. “Ey, rookie, come closer…I need to tell ya somethin very important.” The toa knelt down and got close. “I’m not dyin don’t give me that look! and back up some would ya?” Sylus moved back a inch to give Boridus some room. “Much obliged mate, now I can’t say honestly that I’m certain bout this but I got a special request for ya, next time your in Hydrolion…can you steal some files from the mainframe? I need to know…I need to know what happened to my friend, if they did him in or not.” Ancient and Sylus turned to leave but not before Boridus called over to him one more time. “An another thing…people have been goin missing recently, we found em eventually…or what’s left of the…half eaten bodies. There’s a monster roamin thses parts, jus thought I’d warn ya.”
Back at New Odina, Gadget was typing away on a terminal accessing random files. Files on Hydrolion and AREO leaked schematics, investigation reports on Crystal Palace and Sundar. A article about a prototype weapon powered by toa energy found in the wreck of a rocket 78 years ago…it was moved to the AREO R&D center before a freak accident forced it to be moved once again to…Terrashire Trading co. But that place was shut down years ago. Gadget selected a recent entry on a bounty notice for a monster labled as ‘The Hand’ and deleted it. Someone was going to pick it up not knowing what it was and end up losing their life because of it. But when has that been a problem before?
Chapter 13 {Time Marches on part 1}
Greetings hello! my name is Makuta Nezarus, and I will be recording in these tablets for posterity
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
entry 1
Brother Krika approached me today on the behalf of the villagers to demonstrate my abilities. I will admit I am somewhat nervous, I was originally stationed in the Iron Canyon to keep watch over a mysterious box that was uncovered there at least I was until I was summoned. I am going to attempt to create a portal without the assistance of a Kanohi Olmak to prove to everyone that other worlds exist, you see I have come to believe that we are one of many worlds in a web of gateways…some where all exist in harmony after a great disaster or one ruled by a tyrant, all it takes is one slip in the ‘prime reality’ to create them. I want to determine where our timeline began for research purposes, If I am to open a portal I will need the box shipped out and that won’t be easy by myself, I’ll contact a group of matoran to assist me.
entry 2
Moments before history being made a time that is often forgotten before the big event, normally for anyone else this would be nerve-wracking but I have full confidence in my abilities. If I can prove to everyone that the ‘prime reality’ exists and the means to travel there using the box device, I can already imagine the benefits that would come with crossing roads with other realms. A minute before my big showing and my preparations are just about complete…time to make history!
entry 3
I had it…I had it right there and i fell in! lost somewhere in who knows where! confound it all! To make matters worst, my body is heavily damaged and there is no antidermis nearby for me to heal leaving me no choice but to evacuate and search for a new one. these flat dead-lands go on for miles, I fear if i do not find a suitable body soon my essence will fade away and I will die…right now I am using the body of a deceased toa (I’ve learned that toa in other universes are as tall as the matoran form my world) the body is a temporary but unsuitable host for my form, these lacerations and puncture holes in the corpse are concerning what could have done this?, I fear this damage will mean that I will have to abandon it soon.
entry 4
A new body! and a suitable long lasting host! although not without some difficulty involving coaxing his dying spirit from the cadaver, I found him lying in the center of a unusual out of place oasis overrun with strange flora. his arms and legs were missing and he was barely breathing…he was on the verge of death but what he told me was that he was a magician of sorts from another world betrayed by one who envied his power and banished him here to rot, The Cryptex, a place where order goes to die…when he expired I took over his body wishing him peace in the red star and immediately the oasis perished in the uninhabitable environment as if it were never there, this is a truly cruel place I have found myself in.
entry 5
days of scavenging has earned me a pair of legs and a working arm. I have been granted foods and shelter in a small village known as Hallow-Heart but after I settled a dispute between two parties; the water based Hydrolion and the rock digging Geoscolia, the latter persuading me thinking I was something called a ‘Dark Hunter’ to sabotage Hydrolion’s water batteries a mile west of the village to which I did so whether, it was the right choice I haven’t a clue but after rigging the fluid containers I was confronted by a light projection of a turaga, (How advanced is this water tribe?) It promised to overlook my trespass only if I do something in return…I was to steal a valuable crystal from GEO and bring it to them at the foot of the summit, I don’t think much of a choice was given to me… In the end Geoscolia believed that the batteries had been sabotaged and I was payed by Hydrolion, again believing I was one of these Dark Hunters. On one note the villagers keep calling me Nepharus instead of my actual name Nezzarus, though I have been meaning to correct them I think the name is growing on me.
Chapter 14 [Caravan defense]
The artificial sun rose over Hallowheart Village to begin another day, villagers emerged from their homes to start on the new day. The sand of the desert remained still, occasionally disturbed by faint morning breeze. No living creatures stirred during the early hours, this was the one time where one could admire the beauty of the plains without threat from the wildlife…though while nature slept, industry and crime never did. The quiet was broken by the low hum of a airship descending into the village grounds. Many confused and irritated residents peered out their windows to gawk at the AREO ship landing in the town square. AREO was one of the original six houses that ruled the Cryptex, but where many worked on hydrolics, mining or building, AREO took to the skies, beginning the realmwide shipping company for the other house’s products. Their reputation for fast shipping and safety assured delivery almost overshadowed their ‘purist’ attitude towards those not from the original matoran universe. The hatch doors opened up to reveal five matoran and two toa of air, each one holding zamour sphere launchers and Kanoka launchers, they exited in single file and lined up at the sides of the ramp. From the entrance a smooth backed Skakdi decended from the ramp where he suddenly stopped at the foot of it to stare at the ground. Two more matoran carrying a carpet unfurled it across the dusty floor to let him cross, The Skadki observed the crowd gathering around him murmuring in awe and wonder. “That’s Lazerk…The CEO of AREO! no one has ever seen him in person before!” “The CEO of AREO is a Skakdi?” “Why did he come here of all places?” “I don’t know, I’ve heard of AREO’s tricks, I don’t trust him…” Larzelk took in all the comments made at him with a smile like it was music to his ears. he finally came to the end of the carpet where Bisola stood unfazed by the famed and reneowned CEO of the biggest and only shipping company in the Cryptex. The Skakdi cleared his throat. “I beg your pardon, you must be the representative for Hydrolion? yes?” Bisola nodded unimpressed. “Yes…and your Larzelk The Ace, The Baron of the Sky, Slayer of the Thousand Razor Whales and the titles go on and on…but most importantly…your a Skakdi.” Lazerk and Bisola eyed one another before the CEO laughed. “Ah finally a vagrant of culture! I see you’ve been knowledgeable my various acheivements? most of them are true after all.” Bisola shrugged off the insult and crossed her arms. “Including the one where you used to be a bandit lord?” the air was filled with sudden collective gasps, Larzelk looked at her with a grin. “That too! you really are someone special to even remember that!” he sighed and turned to the crowd. But yes… it’s true, I was a bandit once, surviving off of what I could snatch from unsuspecting travelers and sleeping with a weapon every night. But I eventually grew tired of the robbery and theft and decided to do some good for myself and everyone around me! So with my charisma and many years of designing flying machines, I built AREO from the ground up into what you see today. So yes! I was a thief and a murderer taking from others, and now I am the owner of the most successful shipping business in all of the Cryptex giving to the masses, see? nothing to hide. what about you I wonder?” Bisola fidgeted uncomfortably at the Skakdi’s sudden question and quickly changed the subject. “So what brings you to our village? oh mighty sky baron?” Lazerk grinned and brought out a stone tablet. “I have heard rumors of a mighty hero that lives here, I wish to employ his service in protecting this map while we transport high value cargo from our airbase to the outpost we have on the other side of the Cryptex. if you could bring him to me I would appriciate it enough to offer everyone in this…dwelling place something free in compensation.” a murmur of marvel and questions filled the air at Lazerk’s offer, a door at the far end of the village opened and Nepharus stepped out to investigate. “Are you looking for a hero who lives here? I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere.”

“Hmmm…I don’t recall why I abandoned that matoran on that acursed place specifically did I?” The Makuta pondered to himself, it had come and gone like a impulse feeling, and now he couldn’t remember why.

entry 34
I have arrived on The Island, the singular landmass of the ocean underneath the suface of the Cryptex. Urban legend has it that the island was created by a chunk of rock containing a ancient secret broke off from the cave’s ceiling and fell into the water below, but instead of sinking it floated on the surface and eventually evolved into a lush paridise. The landscape of the Island seems to match the description of the legends exactly, thanks to Geoscolia’s recent incursion into the core of this world and the map recovered from that ill fated caravan run, I can get started on finding the next artifact of my dreams.
entry 35
It appears I am not alone, there are signs of crude habitation all over the jungle, if someone has been here before
entry 36
The Dark Hunters have found this place…more specifically, Sylus has arrived here looking for a treasure on the Island
entry 37
We woke up today to find a strange Matoran rummaging through our stuff, Sylus caught him before he could get away but he got cut by some kind of venomous plant that grew here, I had read about the poisons from imported books of the sort, these plants are called lime roses by their lime pigiment. when harmed the plant’s skin releases a disease that slowly turns the affected’s joints the same color as the plant, while at first it seems harmless it also makes the victim’s limbs frail, and prone to breaking. the only cure to the plant’s toxin is to apply boiling water to the cut and evaporate the venom inside, it is extrememely painful but it will stop infection, sometimes the cure is worse than the disease…
entry 38
I had a dream last night that I had all the components for the ritual and was about to complete the rites for it when everything stopped literally, I did not stop time as I was also frozen. Then there was that voice that I recognized but it didn’t belong to the Prodigal…he told me that I was the ‘chosen one’ and warned me that the matoran was not to be trusted and the artifacts destroyed. Suddenly a bright light cracked through the hole in the ceiling as a terrifying vision of a colossal eye peering through a crack in the sky consuming everything in sight…Then I woke up, my dreams had always been the same ever since I got here the ritual, the voice and warnings and the eye in the sky, I fear thses dreams may actually be a terrible premontion of the future. We will depart in the early hours and leave Ahnvos behind, whatever that being may be it is not what it seems.

Regarding the ‘fallen gods’
“Word travels fast, our Hand, Karzahni falls to his own hubris once more then The Prodigal betrays us for it’s own freedom, we must guard our remaining members…even those who are unloyal…Without our Judgement we have no longer possess the means to recover, we may disagree with one another but one thing is certain, to lose any more would spell catastrophe for us all and incur our Leviathan’s wrath with these disappointing developments as late. Your instructions remain the same, continue to defend the Zigguraut and it’s treasure within until I arrive to claim it…do. not. cross. me. Quetanûl, you may be the Might, but I will not hesitate to put you in your place if you interfere with my mission, I am in no mood for your antics…and while I may not be able to kill you, I will remind you who brought you to submission to begin with if I must. take care now, I will be arriving shortly…
